I think it's kind of a rule of thumb that kids tend to hate the music that their parents like.

I would influence them, but without meaning to. As, I listen to music all of the time. But I guess they would end up liking their own thing anyway.
However, If my child turned out to like some crap such as Britney spears, I would have no choice but to kill them.
I would like to stamp on her face.

They can listen to whatever, but if they turn on some Rap at maximum volume, they're getting thrown out the window

Exactly, except that my daughter listens to gangsta rap.

Influencing is not necessarily pushing. If you try and force a child to like something, a natural response is for them to rebel and do their own thing. However, what you listen to may influence their tastes as they assimilate certain likes and dislikes. You may not be pushing anything forcefully, but you are certainly exposing them to something that they may not have ever listened to on their own and may learn to like as a result.

Wouldn't that be influencing them? Whether it was towards or away from the music you like, it would still be an influence.

I figure I'll let my kid listen to whatever they want, as long as it isn't extreme--gangsta rap, cult chanting, and Barry Manilow will earn them a broken stereo. Of course whatever parents listen to will influence their children--if only by exposing them to music they wouldn't normally be exposed to--but most parents wouldn't "force" their music (or their anything) on their children, only "force" them away from something they disagree strongly with...like gangsta rap, etc.

I'd introduce them to a lot of music. I'd also try to get them to get into any kind of musical instrument. I'd let them learn to play instruments as well as listen to music that I do and try to get them to listen to what they want. There are two sides of a coin, and neither is better than the other.

You can't not influence your kids in everything you do, but make a conscious effort... Yeah, of course I will. Babies like music even before they're born, so I'll play lots of music for my baby.

It doesn't really matter. They will listen to what they like to listen to eventually. I was easily influenced by music when I was younger...mainly because I am not that big of a music fan. Now I listen to what ever catches my ear. Usually it does have a techno beat to it...so I tend to like J-Pop and Rock because of that. I also mainly listen to songs from shows and games because I don't care enough about music to acutally go out and listen to stuff on the radio just to be bombarded by 4 trillion commercials. My kids will be smurfed.
