Actually so was Newfoundland, until 1949, when we joined Canada. We were back and forth between our own country, and a colony of Britain until then.

Kelts are actually pretty cool. There were a bunch of Scotsman on the last big oil project I worked on, and they all wore their tuxedo tops with kelts (instead of their tuxedo pants), as a suit to the Christmas party. Pretty neat, and expensive, apparently. A wee bit drrrafty, though lassie.
