"Police watch Sackville High after shooting threat found
By Richard Dooley
SACKVILLE – Extra police will be stationed near Sackville High School today after threats conjuring up images of a Columbine-style shooting were found in a school washroom yesterday afternoon.
The message painted on a wall threatened a shooting at the school, but it’s not known if the threat was directed at specific individuals or made towards students and teachers in general.
The Mounties say they are taking the threat very seriously.
“I can say we are working with the school board to determine where it came from and what measures will be taken,” said Halifax RCMP spokesman Const. Joe Taplin.
Taplin said school officials notified police after the message was found.
“It’s a threat and we do a threat assessment on it and treat it seriously until proven otherwise,” said Taplin.
Halifax Regional School Board chairman Wade Marshall represents the Sackville area and has a daughter attending the school. He was in Sackville High yesterday for the launch of reading week, but wasn’t aware of the threat until informed by The Daily News last night.
Marshall said the threat has to be taken seriously to protect students and staff at the school.
“Given the times over the last few years in North America with violence and high schools, we will be in contact with the authorities and supporting the police in every way we can,” he said.
Marshall said the threat is frightening and brings up images of the April 20, 1999, Columbine high school shooting in Colorado and the Taber, Alta., school shooting later that year that killed one student and left another wounded. Last month, a Minnesota high school student killed nine others before turning a gun on himself.
The Halifax board has dealt with several violent incidents at local high schools, including threats of fights at Cole Harbour High School and several pepper-spraying incidents at other school this year.
“Our policy is to move very, very swiftly to do whatever we can to ensure our students and staff are in a safe environment,” said Marshall.
Taplin said police will remain near the area until it’s determined it’s safe."
I'm sure tons of schools in the United States have had these cases several times a year, but this has never happened to me before. I'm not all that scared, I personally think it's some idiot trying to get some attention, but when I see examples like Columbine, etc, it makes me think.
These people that are killing other people in the schools, most of the time, from what I've noticed, they've been bullied very badly as noone has accepted them, or they have a rough life. What they do is clearly wrong, but it could of been prevented. Anything can be prevented. If we all just treated people with a little more respect, if we said hello to someone who looked down, if we gave them a compliment, anything, it might just make them better, but that's never going to happen because of idiots who are full of themselves.
