I gotta say, the main characters were great, although I found Selphie and Rinoa a little annoying at times. Zell was a little over-the-top for being sooky, but still a great fighter and character. Squall was overly quite, but for good reason - he has learned to survive on his own, and thus don't trust or have time for anyone. And he didn't have any parents to tell him any different.
