Well I can't say it's the best, but definetely one of the best FFs. Of course FFTA is far superior.
NOTE: You're talking to a FFTA freak.

One of the reasons people become die-hard fans of FFVI is that all too many people concentrate on FFVII and after, because those were the ones that became "mainstream". A lot of it is simply to counteract the FFVII freaks who think FFVII was original and "groundbreaking", or that its graphics made it better than the earlier 8-bit and 16-bit games. If people wouldn't worry about graphics, more people would see the better quality in the earlier games (like IV and VI). You have to look at why it was the best Final Fantasy...gameplay, plot/storyline, individual character backgrounds and scenarios (in the WoB and WoR), music, villians... As has been said earlier in this thread, it didn't make you save the world, you wanted to save the world, because you developed a personal level of love/hate/pity/vengeance/freedom with and for not just the playable characters, but a lot of NPCs as well--General Leo, the woman in Miranda, the kids in Mobliz, etc.
FFVI may not have all been original, but FFVII, which gained a lot of credit and popularity for the Final Fantasy series, took quite a bit from FFVI, and wasn't near as good as it's cracked up to be.
After FF6, the series really lost its 'fantasy' feel. The worlds just quit being unique and standalone.
FF7's story, when you think about it, is just a repeat of 5 (using the Earth's energy up, just like the crystals) and 6......but the main character is much harder to like.
FF8 is just the evil sorceress thing again. I didn't play any after that.
What I really liked about FF6 was how they managed to incorporate THAT world's history into the game very well. The sidestories were very well done as well. Cyan's dream was amazing. I still remember the first time I came across it with marvel. The sunken castle was completely unexpected. The flavor of the world (sort of like a mix between fantasy and the victorian age) was really special. The only thing the game lacks is a sequel. FFX2? How about FF6-2! My hope is that square will use its portables to get back to its roots someday.
Oh yeah, I would never have seen the WoR coming. That caught me completely offguard. Biggest surprise in a game ever, right next to MGS2.
I didn't like that FF6 was so unfocused. You have so many characters that it's hard to care about all of them. It has a lot of great features and it's fun to play through, but try as I might to mix it up, I always end up using the same characters every time. I've accomplished pretty much everything there is to do in FF6 over the years so I don't have much interest in playing it anymore.
Also, I don't like that the world gets destroyed halfway through. The color is drab and depressing. I know its supposed to be that way, but it just grates on me. I liked the first half of the game a lot, but after the world changes I just don't feel like playing as much.
And the whole self help crap in the dialogue with Kefka in the end is pretty barferiffic.
Kefka, need I say more?
what exactly is so great about Kefka? he's a genetically engineered superman who goes crazy and kills a lot of stuff and dresses like a clown.
I don't see any rainbow wig, oversized shoes or bright red nose, but that's beside the point.
I love the graphics, the music, the gameplay (as cheap as it is), the story, the characters, EVERYTHING.
Also, the big deal about Kefka is that (SPOILER)he's probably the only FF villain ever to actually succeed.
Yeah, the fact that Kefka succeeded makes him a lot better, but that's not why I love this game. I guess the overall mix of plot, character, and gameplay made this the best I've ever played. I also love sidequests and item collecting, and this one had tons of both.

Really FF6 was the first RPG that really captivated me emotionally. At the time of its release I was only about 14. I had never thought it was possible for a game to make me feel the way this game did. I actually got involved with the characters and cared about what happened. It was like a movie unfolding in front of me, and I was controlling the script. To this day I've never finished a game feeling quite the same way as I did when I beat this one.
In my opinion if you have'nt had a chance to play this title yet it would be well worth purchasing an old SNES if you dont have one and playing this on its original format. Ofcoarse some would argue that Anthology was just as good or and emulator would suffice. But if you've played the original you have to agree nothing feels quite like it literally.

FFVI is such a well-reknowned game because so many people can relate to the characters. For example, I can relate with Celes simply because every where I go, my past haunts me. Past regrets catch up to me and I get very emotional about it but I don't want to tell anyone about my past because I'm afraid of catching people up in it and I don't want anyone to get hurt. I can relate with Edgar because I'm a hopeless romantic. I LOVE a good love story and I LOVE to flirt with guys...I get just about the same results as Edgar, unfortunatly![]()
I consider FF VI the best because it had everything a story needed;love, betrayal, humor, action, and revenge

beat points in each
VI- the most complete game. vi did everything right. a game far ahead of its time. if u realesed it 2010, and put better graphics in it, it would be the best selling game of all time (my guess). the best villion in kefka, easy to follow storyline. great cast of characters, including Edgar Figaro, the most underrated ff character of all time (imo.)
VII- great cast of characters, quite possibly the best of any game (next to the metal gear series). easy to understand battle system, and ablity to customize characters.
VIII- totally ability to do anything u wanted with characters (except name them). viii had a great story that was easy to understand, and a nice break from the typical ff, or rpg for that matter.
IX- a nice older game feel to it. very easy and straight-foward ability system. sticks to the roots of a white mage, theif, knight, etc. original villion in kuja.
X- great story. i really liked tidus. the whole idea of killing sin was really cool.
worst points of each
VI- too many characters. too many random battles in some places. made u use three parties in kefka's tower (i hated that.)
VII- Extremely convoluted storyline. there was WAY too much going on towards the middle of the game, and the first time i played it, i didnt know what was goin on, except sephiroth and jenova = bad. sephiroth was a good villion, but there were others that were much better.
VIII- at times, it didnt feel like an rpg. squall was a recycled cloud. only six characters.
IX- tons of characters, but i just didnt feel any depth in some of them. the whole idea that a character wanted to be called "Dagger" made me lose a lot of respect for the game![]()
X- cool ideas for characters, but wernt excecuted well. they never said tidus' name! wtf? i really didnt like that. the whole thing wth people talking was a cool idea, but it almost looses some of its ff feel because of it. lack of a real main bad guy.

FFVI is my best FF untill I've played FFVII then it's a toss between the two..
Why is FFVI my best?
everything about it, just compare it to FFV and FFIV and you'll see a huge leap in character design, music, sound effects, hidden characters, storyline, depth and a laughing villan you could here his laugh.. yet they managed to keep the fantasy in the game, not like recent FF they are only FF by name..
