You didn't read my full statement. People use to buy the ps2 for the dvd player and to use when the kids are around to play games.
Actually, one reason the Playstation 2 did so well in Japan was that there weren't many (if any) low priced DVD players out there at the time of its launch. It's quite conceivable that some people bought it just for the DVD player, though much less likely in the US.
I didn't buy a dvd player because I had the playstation.
My parents did, but it's relegated to another room.

According to current information, the PS3 will not burn DVDs. Simply because an A/V device has a blue laser doesn't automatically make it able to write discs.
However, seeing that Blu-ray is a new standard, just the fact the PS3 it plays blue laser discs means a lot. Not to mention that it also plays MP3, DVD, all blu-ray formats, and SACD. I'm not into consoles that much personally, but the PS3 media support alone makes me interested in getting one in the future.
