PS1 games and PS2 systems...

Alright, so earlier today I decide to get another FFIV game going. Great game, I'm bored, got a lot of time, what the hell, might as well, right? So I start playing, and it does fine. But I shut it off to go eat dinner, and I come back a while later and turn it on, and all of the sudden it doesn't recognize the disc. The red "please insert PSX or PS2 format disc" screen comes up, and the damn thing never loads. So I open the disc tray and close it, and the same thing happens...I reset the system, and the same thing happens... After twenty minutes or so, I give up on it. I tried Chrono Trigger, and that worked fine--loaded right up, started the FMV, all is well. So I restart it, take Chrono Trigger out, and put in FFIV...and it doesn't load. I blow the disc off, I blow the system out, I wipe off the disc, nothing helps. It's an almost brand-spankin'-new PS2 (maybe a month old?), so I know that can't be the problem, especially if it works with Chrono Trigger but not with FFIV. I haven't played FFIV much, so it's not like it's too worn out to load or anything...what's up with it?

I've never heard of something like this happening on a "new" ps2.
Try cleaning the lens if you have a dvdplayer cleaner.
And if you have a regular playstation try putting FFIV in that to see if the disc really is the problem.

Try the tape trick and see if that works. My former roommate had the problem with his PS2 not reading all his PSone games and it worked for him.

Just put two pieces of tape on opposites sides of the disk as close to the center hole as possible without touching it, like this. |o| but get as close as you can. Then try it and see if it works.

Yeah, it's one of the new ones, that's really small. And I don't have a DVD player cleaner, but I wouldn't figure I'd need to since it's pretty new and other PS1 games work on it. But I don't have a PS1 to test out the disc...I don't get it, it worked an hour or two earlier.

I don't know what to do to get this game working again. It worked fine a few hours before, why did it stop working?

Is the disc scratched? Try playing it in a different PS2.

perhaps you could try the playstation driver, just use the triangle button and go to "playsation driver" and play with the settings

also try another PS1 game outside of chrono trigger and see if it works

Maybe it's a fickle PS2 and doesn't like the way it's sitting. If it's flat, stand it up, vice-versa.

It is a very rare occurance but the disc itself could be flawed.

I've bought a brand new "Dragon Warrior VII" and it froze when I tried to enter battles. I cleaned the disc and everything and it was the same.

So, then I sent it back and bought another copy of it, and it ran perfectly.

The tape thing does indeed work. It's worked for me quite a few times. Not always, but often enough.

I also use the fake-out trick. Insert a PS2 game and let it load to the starting screen. Then extract the disc (dont reset) and insert the PSX game and reset.

Sounds like you have a form of the DRE(Disk Read Error) it happens to everybody at one point or another. I found an awesome tutorial on how to repair your PS2 yourself. I did it earlire and now mine works like new! I was having the exact same problems you were except I was not able to play PSOne games but able to play PS2 games, lol.

::Note:: If you don't have a TINY Phillips head screw driver I found that a normal Steak knife works just as good.. lol. This tutorial took me a little over an hour to complete, this includes opening the PS2 case, taking out all the screws and removing the cover from the CD drive and cleaning the eye very carefully and re-adjusting the eye to the Default position(This is what fixes it).
