I find that this depends on several factors. One is how you chose to level up. One of the times I played this I chose to level up slowly (leave at night), which made me have to about 4 or 5 times throughout the game level up because I was just too weak. It's best to level up fast (leave at dawn). Another is what weapon you chose to keep at the very beginning. If you chose to keep the rod, then you aren't going to get an ability called Second Chance until very late in the game (SPOILER)in choosing the rod, I've never gotten Second Chance before the end of the Hallow Bastion. If you chose the shield you'll probably get it by the end of the second world, if that, so the game will be a breeze. And if you chose the sword you'll probably get it by the end of the fourth or fifth world, which makes life easier. But getting Second Chance as late as you will if you chose the rod means that you might have to level up to get your HP higher so that you can survive some bosses. Other than that, you'll probably find yourself killing enemies trying to find items for the sythesis shop, and you'll level up in the process.
