How would u react if FF became, er - Star Fantasy???
yes, yes, the many Star Wars references to Final Fantasy. now before anyone says anything, i did enjoy watching "Revenge of the Sith", but if Final Fantasy went Battle Star Galactica, I'D FREAK!! no more Red-Mages, but like R2D2-Mages and you'll get Chewie if you try to summon. think of the magic and the sorcery that would be damaged.

I don't necessarily see how that would be a bad thing. It's this dogmatic thinking that all RPGs must take place in a medieval world of swords and sorcery that's really intimidating most of the publishers from coming out with futuristic stuff. Personally, I fail to see how people aren't tired of all this medieval stuff yet. A good story is a good story, regardless of where the setting is.
I'd love to see another game along the lines of Secret of Evermore or Earthbound. Those were two beautiful games.

There's not really a dearth of sci-fi based RPGs. Now westerns, on the other hand, not many of those...
Note, the next list is asuming sci-fi was meant to be the more defined 'space opera' which is what Star Wars is.
ALL of the FFs are Fantasy, only some of them are sci-fi, and none of them are space operas.
FF8 had just as many scifi elements as FF7, but I'd hardly say they were anything like a space opera.
The only games on DJZen's list I'd really say have tons of space opera elements are Xenosaga 1, 2 (robotrek too, but I haven't 'played' that*I've watched it though*)
Phantasy Star is worth noting, by the way.
Star Ocean ALMOST fits the bill. It seems like Star Ocean desperately 'tries' to be a space opera, but in the end ends up being a medieval game with sci-fi elements, and some space opera elements.

Sci-Fi -- take anything that deals with high technology, space related, or the like. Early Final Fantasies are not Science Fiction, because they ultimately lose in the 'science' department.
Final Fantasy 7 -- giant guns that shoot beams, lasers, giant machines, televisions, rockets, a little bit of space explorationg: true sience fiction.
Final Fantasy 8 -- See above.
Final Fantasy 9 -- I don't know what kind of Fantasy this is, but it's not sci-fi
Final Fantasy 10 -- This is a mix of science fiction and 'traditional fantasy'(whatever that means o_O) but I feel this is not so much science fiction as it is fantasy. In this one, it seems that the technology for GUNS is just barely being developed, and it seems a little sloppy. The Airship is definitely high tech, though... I don't really know. Tough Call, really!
As for a Space Opera Final Fantasy, that might work. I really don't see it happening, though.

I prefer fantasy, but I don't mind sci-fi, especially if it involves large robots that fight, for which I am an admitted sucker for. I play both kinds and enjoy both kinds. If it became a blatant rip-off of Star Wars, however, I wouldn't play it. Star Wars is fine on its own, it doesn't need other franchises trying to cash in on it.
Hum. I don't really know, I've never been too fond of space operas.
What really matters is a good and well-told story.
im a fan big fan of the whole hand to hand sword thing, so unless they completely rip starwars i dunno if they'd be able to pull it off, but i say they should do whatever it takes to get back to good storylines.....by that i mean X story sucked, and the story in XI is kinda open.
hmm...well if they made an ff like they made episode III, i wouldn't be dissapointed at all. episode three was an amazing movie with lots of emotion.
plus, ffxii,imho, is turning out to be the most "star wars" game of all the ff's. yes, u still have summons and magic and the like, but just look at the game, cuz i dont remember much info on it, ie the bangaa, etc.
I think a couple of Final Fantasys that were heavily futuristic would be quite interesting and fun, they could also make way for alot more gameplay, with multiple planets to explore. But overall, I prefer the Swords and Sorcery style. However, I'd choose neither because Every Final Fantasy should be different and original, therefore exploring lots of different themes.
The definition of sci-fi is science FICTION. This doesn't necessarily mean high technology, it means ficticious technology. Technology that doesn't exist. The first noteworthy piece of sci-fi litterature is, believe it or not, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. The book dealt with the re-animation of corpses through electricity, as it had just been discovered that if you stick a metal pin in a dead frog and then send electricity through it, the corpse will begin moving spastically.
Sci-Fi based games similarly don't have to be high-tech. Take Parasite Eve for example. The game revolves around a "what if" based on a widely known scientific fact, that Mitochondria are a symbiotic life form which exist within every cell in the human body. Take a scientific fact, put a ficticious spin on it, and boom. Instant sci-fi. The fact is, we already HAVE sci-fi RPGs, and tons of them. I could probably dig up tons and tons more if I felt like it.
Space operas? Yeah, it's true, there aren't too many of them in RPG from. They are out there though.
We already have Star wars + Final Fantasy, it's called
Phantasy Star (As many people mentioned earlier in this topic)
It has the whole American futuristic sci-fi futuristic feel, as well still has the magic and fantasy themes.
A lot of users here have been mentioning Star Ocean, but Star Ocean is actually more related to Star Trek than Star Wars. Just watch the intro scene for Star Ocean 1, and you'll see what I mean. Star Ocean has many references from Star Trek such as the whole federation deal and the UP3 thingy in Star Ocean 3. There are many more, of course, but I won't go into them.
wouldn't be FF. i'll only go as a far as Zanarkand.

I'm just a happy person.. so I don't mind anything, I suppose.
While FFVII is my favorite, I prefer a more of a Medieval feel, mainly for the FF series. I think if they wish to make real Science Fiction, they should just add more to the Star Ocean series.
