The "Final" part came from the fact that up until late 1987 Square had been putting out games like Thexder and Crest of Yűshi that apparently weren't selling enough to keep them in business, and Final Fantasy was expected to be their last game. The "Fantasy" part came from the fact the game was pretty firmly set in the fantasy genre--what with the dragons and crystals and all--nevermind a robot or two.
