Depends on your own personal tastes. Anything is a waste of money for you if it isnt something you'd enjoy. For me, the PSP has games and features I like, so it wouldnt be a waste of money. If I were to, say, buy an Xbox, it'd be a waste of money for me because it has no games I enjoy. It'd just be a big useless paper weight. But for other people, its a great investment full of games they love.

I should have probably been more specific. I think it is a WASTE of money because i was under the impresion that it offered only past playstion games. In other words after buying my psp i would have to repurchase the games i like to play. I have noticed that Sony has been doing this alot. e.g. brand new thin ps2 with all new adaptors to buy.
You really need to look at the games list. It isnt at all past playstation games, and offers not only a bunch of brand new games, but also the ability to play mp3s, and it even supports UMD movies.
Sony isnt proclaiming the new PS2 to be a new system. Things like that are for people who didnt buy the system to begin with, or who need a new one in general.

I find PSP was well worth the money, and so far I only use it for Lumines, watching videos, playing MP3s, and reading comics.
