The guy in the band who writes the songs is Finnish, but even he manages to make beautiful lyrics in English, better than a lot of the artists who speak English as their native tongue.
:D My words exactly, or almost at least. Nightwish is not one of my favorite bands, but heck, I'm Finnish, so I'll support that statement :)

Rock is just load noises with a greasy man screaming his head off
And if your saying music is all about melody, lyrically and aptitudely then why on earth are you listening to Rock ?
And not even all "heavy metal" is all about screaming and noises. It might depend on how you listen to it - and for how long. I have to admit that before I had acquaintained myself with Death Metal, I thought that it was all "graaaaaaahhghghhahghahghhaarrrrr die die krhhkchkcehkhhkxhkhxkhx", but after a while, when I got used to the loudness, I found the deeper surface, with guitar melodies, solos, and even lyrics (though even now it takes some time to understand) and omg even melodies in grunting ;)
Also, it takes a lot of physical strenght and motoric skills to play the guitar or drums in the way that some of the metal players do. And I respect any player - from any genre - for talent.

I do have to agree that some rock bands, like most rappers, don't have much to say about anything and they just ring-a-ding-ding their guitars, some america rock bands (I don't know the specific genre, so I'm sorry if this sounds anti-american - it's not :o!) I really hate - whenever I see Conan O'Brien's musical guest they mostly consist of those kinds of bands. I hope you understand this point here.

But sometimes even that noisy grindcore/thrash stuff has a meaning - it's a good aggression releaser, try it, it could do good for you too to bang your head against the wall with Slayer or Rotten Sound (a Finnish grindcore band) playing in the background and you suddenly wouldn't have so much negative feelings against everyone and everything :)

One more thing, please don't mix the concept of "rock" with "metal" because they are two different things, although it is true that the metal genre once developed out of rock music but that's all. By the way, did you know that Queen and Led Zeppelin are mostly referred to as rock bands, and most people wouldn't say that their music "is just load noises with a greasy man screaming his head off".

I've got a good idea, why don't we stop having genres of music so everyone has to listen to the same thing all the time. That'll certainly make the world a more interesting place... :rolleyes2

Now, as I've stated before in this thread, rap wouldn't be one of the genres that I like listening to, but then neither would rock or metal. I don't dislike them per se, but I just don't enjoy listening to them.

You say that like it's a bad thing!

To me, music means melody, lyrical aptitude and message.
I can understand how one would feel that way, but does every song out there have to have a "message" or "deep meaning"? I know I sure as hell would get sick of being spoon fed pretentious message and "meaning" all the time. And while the more "meaningful" and "deep" songs certainly have an important place in music. Surely the most "pointless" and "shallow" songs have their place as well. Though, you show me one of the latter songs, and I'll show you someone who thinks it belongs in the former description. Also, you show me one of the former songs, and I'll show you someone who thinks it belongs in the latter description. You see, it's all in the ear of the beholder.

And although I understand some people's points against rap, the one thing you can't argue, though, is that it takes heaps of talent and ability to do what those guys do. Have you seen the speed that some of them can rap at, or heard the lyrical ingenuity that some of them demonstrate? And they do all this in sync with a beat? While rap is not my thing, I cannot deny that some of them are ridiculously skilful at what they do.

Person A: "OMF all rap is about gangstas bragging about how many hos and bling dey have!!!"
Person B: "It's not all like that..."

Person B: "OMF all rock is about greasy, hairy men squealing!!!"
Person A: "It's not all like that..."

    :rolleyes2

Please people, every musical genre has a place in music, otherwise, it wouldn't be a genre in the first place. And that genre isn't going to die any time soon, so for your well-being; either learn to live with it, or the most easy and simple solution of all; don't listen to it.

Before anyone bashes an entire genre of music, they must listen to more than two artists. They must become familiar with a good number of artists to form a respectable opinion. It's silly to form a judgement based on eminem and Ja Rule. It's like hating an etire race of people because two people.

No Spiff, I hate all Americans AND Irish, simply because of you.

Seriously, I go back to my original point, sit down, shut up, and enjoy your goddamned music.

As a human, it's rather embarassing to see this topic still in existence.

My thoughts exactly. I don't always want to hear something with a deep message, either.
But then again, you can always not listen the lyrics and just listen to the music :) At least that's what I do when I don't want to think about all the sucky stuff going on in the world or other bad stuff. Just turn off the ability to understand words (is that possible :D?) or then just filter it like it's only one part of the composition (which it is, haha, silly me) and not the main point.

Oh, right. I forgot about that. I have to agree, it takes a lot of practice.

That's right, but discussion seems to evolve to a lot better ways when two intellectual people discuss the opinions they disagree on ;) At least so it seems to me - agreeing seems so boring at times :P

Nah, it wasn't that, it was more being flamed at by certain members which bugged me. They don't have to agree with me, but they didn't need to totally flame me about it.

And on the topic of flaming, this thread's been pushing it. Let's stop with the personal attacks or it will be closed.

I think the topic itself was INVITING flame, why moan when you get it back?

I don't feel the need to mock other genres I don't particularly like, it's extremely petulant & arrogant. Now you want the topic closed because not only some disagree strongly, but are able to bite back. Let's face it, you topic WAS a petulant little provokation. I stated mty view once & left this bs thread but now it's getting dumb & the thread starter is no more innocent than the people rising to the bait.

Let's move on, i beg of you, close this madness & ban 'YOUR FAVORITE MUSIC IS SH!T' threads from now on.
