Yes, I was flying around the golden saucer and I see this pretty red thing. I was curious so *pokes red object* and was watching the game over screen 15 seconds later.
The same exact thing happened with emerald, but in his case I hadn't saved for three hours.

How do you figure Planet-blasting cannon-wielding Vegnagun would lose to the weapons? OK. YRP had an easy time defeating it. But the Weapons would have been easy too if they were the Final Bosses ^_^ besides, Vegnagun was not a single battle. Just like the fight against Sin in FFX, you have to fight this massive thing in sections.
The Weapons are huge, but Vegnagun is practically the size of Zanarkand which is three times bigger than Midgar. If in FF7, you had the benefit of fighting the Weapons section by section, they would have been sooo much easier to defeat than Vegnagun.
Actually Emerald is the one you can use KoTR on. Ruby counters with devastating attacks the second you use KoTR once. The person equipped with this wonder summon is intsantly killed. The game-guide's own advice is to use W-Summon+KoTR on Emerald and Quadra+Bah0 Mime on Ruby. Because I've only got one mime, I can't actually complete this yet.

"Deserve to die" and "whether or not they are fun to kill" are two different things. ^_^;
The Planet knows how to take care of itself, that is evident. The Planet is quite capable at keeping itself going. Of course, the Planet isn't one concious soul like a human (uh, homo sapien), it is made of Lifestream. It's not an issue of The Planet vs. Human Beings, it's simply the Planet surviving. The Weapons were created at first to destroy Jenova, a virus, and then woke them again to gather enough energy to stop Meteor. If humans had to die, so be it, says the Planet. It needed the life energy. That's that. Nature isn't always pretty, but that's how it works.
So I wouldn't say the Weapons DESERVED to die, they were doing their job. "Deserving to die" is certainly a matter of opinion.
But as far as I'm concerned, they were put in the game to be beaten, and they're a challenge and I enjoy the battle. So of course I'm going to. ^_^
I guess so after all they might just go crazy and go killing everyone and we don't want that do we?
