    Default The select button...

Just what the hell was it meant for? It doesn't seem to do much, and it sure as hell doesn't seem to "select" anything. This brings me to another unimportant question: Why is it called the "select" button if it doesn't select anything? My theory is that the "select button" is just a lame (and not to mention poorly executed) attempt at sophistication. What are you're thoughts on the select button?

Extremely good point. The select button seems to pretty much be nearly obsolete on it's own, and seems to be only ever used in conjunction with other buttons, like the old 'push start + select' combo. Strange.

The Select Button have several uses in plenty games. It lost its main purpose when it was originally used to "Select" options when starting a new game, nowadays, it's just used as a button that usually opens options during gameplay, or serves a different purpose. Good thing Nintendo was smart enough to omit the select button from the controllers for N64 and GameCube.

Apparently, I have been declared banished.

GBA games use it all the time, considering how short that is on buttons anyway.

Most PS2 games seem to use it to bring up options menus.

Originally, you used the Select button to cycle through options, way back on a lot of games for the NES and such. Anymore it's useless. I think the Cube has been the only thing to ditch it so far.

It's there, to make the controllers look symetrical. No controller (except the N64) would look good with the start button in the center.

I don't know what kind of games you're playing where the Select button isn't getting used.
