FFVI uses a 32,768 (2^15) integer variable limit value. While damage caps at 9999, the variable type actually tracks damage beyond the limit. After 32,768, so I understand, the value will reset to 0. It's entirely possible that, could you exceed the damage limit, you would be dealing in the range of 33,000 damage. However, given the game's innate limitations, what should be 9999 damage resets to a minimal value. However, if your magic stat is ≥128, you should be able to deal 9999 damage with much weaker spells.

Are you using any cheats? I don't know it would apply to FFVI but I've experienced when using level cheats that when boosted to level 99 without actually gaining the levels through battle that my power does not raise. It's probably not that but may as well leave no stone unturned.

i agree with masamune1600 and eestlinc.masamunes theorie is likely to be correct and eestlinc is right in saying use weaker spells and if you are using cheats shame on you.

By the way, are you using the SNES version or PSX version? Not that it matters, just curious.

The actual calculation for magic is this:

    Damage = Spell Power * 4 + (Level * Magic Power * Spell Power / 32)

Ultima has a spell power of 150

From what you told us, Strago should be doing exactly 60,000. With the damage resetting at 32,768 like masamune1600 said (I also heard something like that...), you should be doing 27,232 damage and so should still be doing 9999 damage from the damage limit...

Ultima ignores defence, so it doesn't really matter who you use it on...

If you don't know your magic power, then we get something like this:

    150 * 4 + (99 * Magic Power * 150 / 32) - (32,768 * 2)= 458
    Some simple math and...
    464.0625 * Magic Power = 65,394
    So...
    Magic Power = 140.91636
    Let's say 141.

Now that you know that, plan your attacks strategically.

    Take Bio for example.
    53 * 4 + (99 * 141 * 53 / 32) = 23,331

It's well above 9999 and safely below 32,786. Perfect!
Flare might be better though, it'll give you 26,413 and it has all the perks of Ultima. And who says the strongest spells are always the best?

The Flying Spaghetti Monster loves you too

yes flare works fine and my strago has a magic power of 128(max) he doesnt use items wich increase magic power (yet) btw my celes (also mag pwr 128) does 9999 damage with ultima so i presume the problem is the gem box i just need to control it

and im using snes caus if theres a way to make te ps emulator frame skipping id like to know (btw dont worry i have a psone and a snes and 2 versions of FFVI so nothing illegal here :P)
