I was on Inis Mór a while back. I was sitting on the steps to this statue, looking out at the bay. It was a good day, bright and clear.
This elderly Japanese woman was sitting beside me. She looked at me and I looked at her, and she pointed to herself and said:
"Japanese."
I pointed back to myself and replied:
"Irish."
With her thin hands she guestered out over the bay. What she said next I will never forget.
"Beautiful."
I simply replied,
"Yes." There was nothing more that could be said.
It's a strange feeling, when someone comes from the other side of the world, from a country so intricate and richly cultured as Japan, to tell you that your country looks beautiful
