Thread: Mythril, Orihalcum and Adamantine

    Default Mythril, Orihalcum and Adamantine

Does anyone know any detailed background information about these materials and their origins? I think I remember mythril from Tolkien's Lord Of The Rings books, but I know nothing about the other two. Are they are Square exclusives or were they taken from somewhere else?

Can't find anything on Orihalcum, though, and in fact I don't even remember encountering it in a Final Fantasy game.

Orichalcum, is the name of one of Zidane's Daggers. It's also the name of a smithing material in Crystal Chronicles.

'kay, that spelling comes up in Wikipedia fine.

I must not have paid much attention to Zidane's equipment, unless that was just one of the ultimate weapons I never bothered getting.

Wasn't it Orichalcum or Orichalcon? o.o

And Orichalcon isn't an FF exclusive. It appears in the Gainax's anime "Nadia and the secrets of Blue Water".

Wikipedia has an entry for Orichalcum, but not for Orichalcon or Orihalcum. So make of that what you will; it's probably one of those things that can be translated several different ways from the Japanese.

In any case, it would make sense for orichalcum to appear in non-Final Fantasy games, as the metal has existed in legends since at least the time of the ancient Greeks.

It amazes me how people don't check to see the links people have given even in threads as short as this one.

Without looking too much into it, I know it's an armor in FFX and a knife in FFII, FFIII, FFV, FFIX, and the GBA version of FFI.

Hmm. Is it one of the Legendary Weapons in FFV? I think I might remember it now that you mention it in that context.

The knife is the only weapon type to be featured twice in the set of Legendary Weapons, but neither of those knives are Orihalcum. It's actually rather standard fare in FFV.

Much like most weapons labeled "Ultimate" really aren't. Gotcha.
