was ghandi racist?
i found this quote today from ghandi "Hitler killed five million [sic] Jews. It is the greatest crime of our time. But the Jews should have offered themselves to the butcher's knife. They should have thrown themselves into the sea from cliffs."
is it me or is it a hugely racist thing to say coming from a man we all believed was peaceful and pretty much untouchable? or am i reading it wrong?
I think he is just stating the truth for the Jews having so much power and religious influence, with all that influence who wouldnt target them?(speaking in terms that if you were Hitler of course).
Are we sure he didn't mean, "They should have killed themselves in order to not give Hitler the satisfaction", or something? The quote seems weird to me, too.

Ghandi was a great leader and a visionary, but he was by no means perfect. Apparently he was not very fond of Africans, though in his defense that was the times.

He wasn't that fond of the western civilization either. When he was asked the question "What do you think of western culture?", he answered "It sounds like a good idea."

That quote really doesn't make sense to me; and I don't doubt that what you have there is a Ghandi quote....I just think it's incomplete. There has to be more to actually put it in context. There's no way he would have been stupid enough to say something like that regardless of whether or not he was peace-loving.

Jews aren't a race. They're a religious minority and an ethnic minority, but not a race. I know it sounds stupid but there is indeed a difference.

I may be reading it wrong, but I'm pretty sure Ghandhi is saying "Yes, all those Jews being killed was terrible, but they really had it coming and should've done the deed themselves". I'm interested in hearing the whole context of this quote.
