They wanted our über-leet planet because we hadn't completely destroyed it yet. Or something. I can't remember the book very well, which is probably because I read it over ten years ago.
I liked it, but I thought it would have been a lot better if Spielberg had focused on more than one story.
A lot of critics came down hard on War of the Worlds. Personally, I thought it was amazing. It's been a long time since I've seen an exciting terror film that wasn't totally cheesy. I was on the edge of my seat for most of the movie. I hated the ending, but I went expecting it (it is a Spielberg film after all) so it wasn't so bad, the rest of the movie made up for it in full.
Yeah, I thought it was pretty good. When I saw the preveiws, I thought I wouldn't like it. Critics suck. XD
yeah it was a waste of my 5 bucks since You know I didn't need the whole seat only the edge yeah lol I thought it was pretty good but its just seemed dumb the ending that is.Originally Posted by Necronopticous
I loved the movie. It was electrofying, edge of your seat goodness. Some scenes literally had me holding my breath and gripping the arm rests. No one can do a Summer blockbuster like Spielberg.
Not the that the movie didn't have it's problems. But for a pop-corn flick, it was great.
What I liked:
(SPOILER)1) All the scenes of destruction and mayhem.
2) The scene where the crowd attacks Ray and Co. in the car. That was such a chilling sequence for so many reasons. And probably the best example of Spielberg's masterful direction.
3) The river of bodies.
4) The Ferry Boat sequence.
5) The fact that everything was seen through the eyes of Ray and his family.
6) It wasn't a war, it was an extermination.
What I disliked:
(SPOILER)1) Robbie surviving. I understand that the ending was faithful to the book, but man oh man, It just SUCKED.
2) Mary and her family looking like they stepped out of a Sears family photo when they came out to greet Ray and Rachel. What the hell? The entire world is being covered in blood, but these people don't have a scratch on them?
3) The hide-and-seek sequences in the basement. I have a great ability to suspend my disbelief, but I'm supposed to buy the fact that a super intelligent alien can be fooled by a mirror? Please.
4) General pacing and continuity issues.
5) Robbie needing to fight with the Aliens. What? Seriously, what?
The first hour was almost flawless. Dakota Fanning made me want to strangle her, but I think making her annoying might have been intentional to add to the frustration of the situation. The second part wasn't nearly as good and most of my problems with the movie came toward the end. What I loved most about the movie was how downright depressing parts of it were. Cold, calculated murder on the Alien's part, mass panic, mob violence, and virtually zero chance for the humans to fight back. Which is why the ending was so jarring after all the wonderful grimness.
But overall the film was great fun. I don't think I've seen such a tense and compelling movie in a really long time.
Necronopticous, most of the major critics have given War of the Worlds decent, if not great, reviews. Excluding Ebert of course. But La Ebert went senile a long time ago.
And on a slightly related note, the trailers attached to this movie made me go spastic. King Kong, Chronicles of Narnia, and Elizabethtown trailers one after the other? I nearly died.

I could have seen it yesterday, but nooooo, I had to go see Bewitched.
Anyway, it sounds good, so I'll go see it sometime soon, I hope.
Boy am I an unfunny ass.

btw WTF was up with those kids wanting to rebel in that situation(should that be in teh spoiler?)
I saw it the other day. I though it was awesome. I laughed, I cried, and several times I screamed "HOLY"... Well, I didn't really cry, but I did plenty of the other two.
I thought it would be action packed and it kinda was but it was more of a horror thing due to the mass panic. Why do people panic in dangerous situations in a mass group in which they know panicing gets them killed especially when your jsut panicing and not thinking,
Thats th e only hting that kept tom cruise nadhsi family alive.
I think in danger situations, instinct generally takes over, and the instinct is to get the hell out of there as quickly as possible. Which would explain the panic.
That was scary int eh basement part I mean dang that guy was being fraeking loud sinc ethere place was already checked out they wouldn't have been found out but nooo the guuy had to make some noise.
Exactly. The reason why I loved the Ferry boat sequence was because I've actually been in a situation where a friend's hand was ripped away from mine as a mass of people were pushing and falling on top of me and I honestly went into a frenzied panic. And so the terror of that scene was real for me.Originally Posted by The Man
The lengths people will go through to try and save themselves are so primal and sometimes even unreasonable. Which is why I thought the Car and the Ferry Boat scenes were so fascinating. And really, what are the obligations we have toward our fellow human beings during life and death situations? The scene with Ray being sucked into the machine was nice because it showed people banding together to save one another, but I think the more realistic scenes were the ones of mass panic and desperation.
I think that this whole movie was realistic liek when they were int eh thingy majiger the machine thing and when it sucked up tom cruise and he set off the grenades those people banning together to save him pretty showed that iif they do something and ocme together and not get themselves killed they were going to have to work together and also the mass panic is also realistic. It was all realistic and it was pretty good.
