This guy apparently plans to parachute off the Empire State Building. Is that even possible? Discuss.

I know nothing about parachuting, but I don't see why not.

I saw a guy parachuting off the Eiffel tower the last time I visited Paris. Just like in A View to a Kill, cool, I kinda wanted him to crash though.

I don't think it is, Parachutes can't open when they're that close to the ground.

It's called Base Jumping, and yes it is usually illegal. I think you can get special permission, but most just do it anyway, the chase being half the thrill. I'm not sure about if you can open a chute and be alright, but I think if it was already open and up then he should be fine.

You can totally do it. As long as you have permission from the gov... or sometime even not.

It's the newest fad, called BASE jumping.

It's totally XXXXXXTREME! all the cool kids are doing it.

    Boldly go.

It's called base jumping, as in anyoen who does it is a basehead.

Yeah, that's BASE jumping. It's really dangerous. I don't think you can do it from the Empire State Building, I'd think that the paracute would be too big.

People have been base jumping from buildings for years now. NYC is kinda huge, so there's bound to be sufficient room to manoeuvre.

The biggest risk with base jumping - whether you're doing it from a cliff, a building or a waterfall - is the wind. A miscalculation, or a sudden wind change, can blow you into the side of the structure you've just jumped off. A few have died because of this.
