The point is that Willy Wonka doesn't have demented humor, the subtle demented humor of the original is gone, replaced with obvious and childish humor and one liners. The movie shouldn't be a kid's movie, and even as such, it doesn't have anything to do with Willy Wonka having a stupid cliche past. Why does he need an explanation? The entire message of the original film, and book, is traded in for childish humor, teaching a family lesson, and jokes like "You smell like old people!"
