Reading at a close distance strains the eyes, and makes them focus closer to you than normal. Since most "nerds" read a lot, they all become near-sighted. This is why the more intelligent people tend to wear glasses, since they tend to read more than someone with an 80 IQ.

ANY close-focusing of the eyes is detrimental to long-range eyesight(at least, until your eyes are fully developed around 20-years-old). The biggest cause is reading, but there's also being on the computer, for example. Video games usually aren't a problem because most people sit more than a few feet away from the TV.

Why would wearing glasses make you a communist. Wearing glasses doesn't mean you are a nerd or a communist, it means that your eyes are weak and need help from good old convex lens.

People do read when they are on the computer but people still watch videos and play games on their computer.

It doesn't matter what you're DOING on the computer - only if your eyes are focused! Just like looking at picture books all day would also affect your eyesight. There may be some subtle difference between looking at pictures and reading words, but I'm not aware of any.

Are those for far-sightedness? I forget. If so, that comes with age - and that's because your eyes have been focused outward for so long, they now have trouble with the transition of focusing closer in.

It's just a thing. I wear glasses for computer and stuff now, and noone calls me a nerd. However I guess I was a bit of a "nerd" at school, (considered one anyway by the "cool" people) and I didn't even wear glasses then. Yeah. I think it's something to do with people growing up =P Glasses can be sexy. Or just cute. ^_^
