Default Ebonics to be taught in SoCal districts

    http://www.sbsun.com/Stories/0,1413,...969790,00.html

I think this is an interesting step. I'm more for it than against it, although since it doesn't really affect me as much, I don't feel terribly strongly on the matter. However, there is one quotation in this article I strongly am opposed to.

[q=Teresa Parra, SB Co. Board VP] Teresa Parra, board vice president, said she worried the new program would have an adverse effect.

"I'm afraid that now that we have this the Hispanic community, our largest population, will say, 'We want something for us.' Next we'll have the Asian community and the Jewish community (asking for their own programs). When will it end?' (1)

Parra said the district should focus on helping all students who are at risk.

"I've always thought that we should provide students support based on their needs and not on their race,' Parra said.(2)[/q]1. Why be afraid of providing support for Hispanics, Asians, and Jews? Why the hell not? Why wouldn't you want to help people from other races? Support should be given independent of race, true, but that doesn't mean support should be given being color-blind. I understand that public schools can only do so much, but that's just a we-don't-have-enough-money so-let's-raise-taxes oh-look-at-the-defense-department la la la argument.

    2. Why do you differentiate people's needs from their races? People have common needs, and people from different cultures have different needs. I should probably learn about Black history in greater detail, but what about Indian history? Why can't I get that in my public school? What about Asian history? Jewish history? I should be learning about them all, in fact, so that I am more well-balanced in dealing with those ever-so-touchy interracial borders.

*"you" is referring to the speaker, Teresa Parra, not you, oh fellow members.

This is the funniest thing I've ever heard of in my entire life, and for once I'm not exaggerating.

No no no no NO! We can't freaking teach Ebonics in schools. Everybody in America should be 100% fluent in english. We can't start teaching a bastardization of the english language. smurf! It isn't even a real language. This will only work as a divider. Ebonics needs to dissapear, and it most definetly should NOT be promoted in schools.

smurf this program. It is hard enough to understand people who don't pronounce words clear enough. If anything there should be a class where they teach you how to to say things properly. Talking in ebonics everywhere will help you NOT get a good job.

This is just a flat out dumb idea.

They did that a while ago, my Dad had to learn ebonics. People speak bad enough, no need to encourage them.

And this is why you'll now have a class to teach you to understand! Problem solved.

Or do it the other way around. Teach them to do it right instead of ~(¯O¯~) BAKEMONO all over the language.

Are you kidding me? That's insane.

Well, I'm certainly pissed off. "Yes, let's try to further the gap between different races!" Awesome idea. :rolleyes2 If we can't communicate properly, we're not going to be able to understand each other.

If they start doing this in my school, smurf it. No way in hell, man. Why can't we start teaching English as a language, or use speech therapy programs? Lame. Lame.

My greatest hope is that next they'll consider implementing Engrish into schools.

Make your time. All your base are belong to us.

This is completely stupid. Kids need to learn to speak proper English. I could care a hang about the political correctness/incorrectness of the whole thing. But the problem is that after these kids graduate, they're going to be at a huge disadvantage applying for jobs.

Confession time, I used a Translator to produce the Ebonics. However the point is that while you might be able to get away with the first speech style in a business meeting or job interview, you most definately won't with the second. So a kid raised to think speaking that way is acceptable is going to have a harder time in life.

That isn't an ebonics translator. Just an idiot translator.
