So the first match isn't really something that a person without any Blitzball experience who is playing through the game the first time should expect to win?

I mean I'll replay until I win if it's critical, but it doesn't sound like it.

Good. I was getting worried about the first match. I hate games that throw in compulsory mini-games without cutting the first time player some slack. :sweatdrop
