10. Voivod - Dimension Hatross

Voivod is a speed/thrash metal band similiar to Metallica and Megadeth with a more present punk influence. Dimension Hatross is their best album. This album is less chaotic, more tight, and has better production than previous releases like "Killing Technology" (Still good, though). Songs are written in an interesting progressive style. Listen to: Experiment, Psychic Vacuum.

9. Dream Theater - Awake

Dream Theater is getting pretty popular now, I believe, but their best albums were in the early 90's when they still had keyboardist Kevin Moore. While this band is known for creating ultra-technically difficult music that is allegedly unintresting (See: newer albums), this album is immune to that critisism. There are the solos, time/rhythm changes that this band is known for, but they are done in a tasteful manner and are musically relevent to the songs. Listen to: 6:00, Space-dye Vest.

8. Megadeth - Rust In Peace

This is the best thrash/speed metal album. I've heard that Dave Mustaine reportedly sobered up before making this album, and it shows. The music is strikingly more technically complex, yet is still thrashy in the vein of classic Megadeth. Guitarist Marty Friedman is a master, adding very tasteful, "neo-classical" shred solos to the mix (as opposed to mindless wankers such as Rusty Cooley or Yngwie Malmsteen). People will, unfortunately, say that Master of Puppets by Metallica is better. Master of Puppets has one song that is useless filler (Lepar messiah). You will find no such instances on this album. Listen to: Holy Wars, Hangar 18.

7. Tiamat - Wildhoney

Tiamat startted out as a pretty standard Death metal band, but on this album only small amounts of that past remain. Mostly this is calm, atmospheric metal. However, the term 'metal' is used loosely, since many songs have strong progressive rock leanings (many remind me of Pink Floyd's song 'Wish you were Here'). This is the kind of album that is recommended even for non-metal fans,as they will surely find elements of interest here. Listen to: Whatever that Hurts, Gaia, Do you Dream of me.

6. Iron Maiden - Somewhere in Time

This is the first Iron Maiden album to use synthesizers, and it serves the band's vision and sound wonders, adding whole new atmosphere to the songs. The vocals of Bruce Dickinson truly shine; his powerful voice is delivered in perfect hard rock fashion. Some people may prefer the follow-up, 'Seventh sonof a Seventh Son' to this, but this is my favorite. How could people listen to cheesy hair metal in the 80's when wonderful music like this was available? Listen to: Wasted Years, Stranger in a Strange land

5. Finntroll - Jaktens Tid

TOTAL classic. This band mixes their native Finnish folk music (called Humpa I believe) with the aggressive death/black metal of Sweden. The result is interesting. Their first album, called 'Midnattens Widlunder' I believe, is commendable, but this album has better production and a clearer concept. RIP Somnium. Listen To: Skogens Hamnd, Jaktens Tid, Aldhissla

4. Fates Warning - The Spectre Within

This album is power metal, but that term includes certain boring cliches and a lack of creativity that is NOT present in this release. The vocals of Jon Arch sound similiar to Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden, but are delivered in a totally different, unique way, in which the vocal lines often have little rythmic relationship to the music (similiar to Maynard of Tool), yet the music still flows perfectly. This is a VERY complete album. All of the songs have this certain otherworldy atmosphere to them, which gives each of the songs subtle, conceptual relations to one another. Fates Warning newer, more progressive music is of interest as well, but this is their greatest album. Listen to: The Apparition, Orphan Gypsy, Traveller in Time.

3. Celtic Frost - Into the Pandemonium

Celtic Frost Startted ou their first two albums playing interesting thrash, with certain pieces like "Dawn of Megiddo" having hints of certain ideas that were to come. But this release is truly unlike anything before, not only within the world of heavy metal but beyond into mostly all realms of music. Yes, there are certain moments of thrash, but they are interspersed with amazing moments of avant-garde experimentation. Many of the songs incorperate strings masterfully, in addition to opera singers that at times sing in this near sprechsimme (half speech, half singing) style that is reminiscient of Arnold Schoenberg's (!) work, Pierrot Lunaire. At the core, though, the music still retains that low-end agressive edge that has become this band's trademark. HIGHLY recommended. Listen to: Rex Irae(Requiem), I won't Dance, Caress into Oblivion.

2. Mercyful Fate - Don't Break The Oath

THE heavy metal album. This album makes me yearn for a time when metal bands actually had talent. This album rules so much I can't believe it. King Diamond is a master vocalist who must sing in at least 4 different octaves. He must be heard to be believed. Guitarists are also prominent members here. They write complex, developing pieces with multiple parts and subtle references to 70's prog-rock. The dual-lead Style is up to the standards of all heavy metal, giving nods to Judas Priest. Each song develops in a very story-like manner, yet fit together seamlessly. Although this is basically a perfect album, I'm not sure if non-fans of heavy metal will enjoy it due to King Diamond's voice and the lyrics. Listen to: Come to the Sabbath, A Dangerous Meeting.

1. Arcturus - La Masquerade Infernale

This is definitely a one of a kind album. Nothing sounds like it. I am amazed at the compositional genius of this band. My feeble lexicon is too small to accurattely portray this music, but I will say you have garaunteed never heard any music like this before. The "Infernal Masquerade" is exactly as this album sounds. The most similiar music to this is the Celtic Frost album mentioned earlier, but that still doesn't accurately describe the music. Recommended to fans of any and all music who are bored with the conventional forms. Listen to: The Chaos path, Master of Disguise.

You just reminded me, after Logan told me at least a year ago, that I should get that album, and I finally did, and now I've fallen in love.

It's like Death Cab For Cutie, only so much more...evocative, I love it.

Could even call them the American version of The Reindeer Section, wonderful stuff.
