the situation in africa is where 30,000 children today will starve to death. that's out of 50,000 people a day starving to death. that's one child every 3 seconds.

the amount to save these people? half a sticj of gum per rich westerner per day. a few pennies.

what would that pay for? all debt wiped clean, a doubling in aid, a dropping of trade tarrifs, an end to us and eu subsidies. that was the goals set out by the africa commissions (and live 8 which the big 8 ignored).

damn. the government is so smurfing selfish. we could easily divert funds into that. I mean we have government grants that you can get for just being a certain age.

Edit:I read into the niger thread, and have changed my mind. it should not be up to my, or any other government to give money to people in need. the money that they admitedly to need, should come from somewhere else, but not the government.

well i refuse to buy western goods where possible to support africa. and it doesn't even affect american or eu farmers as it is all subsidised anyway.

when i go into the supermarket. if i see a hoice between american bananas or african ones i will buy the african ones. even if they are more expensive. same with other food; oranges, sugar, meat, chocolate. if it is fair trade (alot of stuff is now a days) then even better. american and eu farmers are given subsidies. these gurantee prices for what they grow. sold or not. if it doesn't sell the government buys it. so not buying these goods doesn't affect the farmers. it does though help african farmers.

for me it would depend on how much more it was. if it was enough to hurt me.. prolly not. i'm fairly poor so it doesn't take much. i for example wouldn't pay double... mayb 5% or so more... but it all depends on cost/earning factors etc.
