Cover Art

Okay. Now as we all know, a game's cover art can greatly increase or decrease the sales of a particular product. Nowadays, people look for the flashiest, sexiest, and coooolist box art on the shelves.

So this raises a few questions:

Have you ever bought a game purely because of the box art?

What are your favorite/least favorite cover arts, or whch ones were you dissappointed by?


My favorites would have to be: (these are mostly Amercian btw)

KH (AM: this is one my the best I've seen for PS2)
FF X (Amercian: I really like the picture of Tidus coming out of the water.)
Jade Empire (AM: I've yet to play the game, but the art looks very glossy and high class)
SO III (AMthe slip-case cover definetly played a role in my purchase)
GTA games (AM: the whole collage thing looks very original and easily distinctive from the other games)
Racthet & Clank Going Commando: (AM:this cover looked very shiny, and that usually makes it attractive. The flames were awesome as well)
We Love Katamari (Jap version: I think this is the first box art ive seen with a picture of an actual place on it. Too bad the Amercian one sucks)
Ico (JP: The simple colored-pencil styled cover is leaps and bounds ahead of it's Amercian predecessor)
Dark Cloud 2 (AM: Very colorful background; I think this was one of the main reasons i bought it.)
RE 4 (AM: The zombies chasing Leon adds nicely to the game's atmosphere)

Some of my least favs/dissapointments:

God of War (AM:I liked the cover, but a close-up of Kratos or something would have been much cooler IMO. The blue background just didnt fir for me.)
Red Faction: (AM:wtf? a red gun? okay then.)
Earthbound: (AM: Man, this one makes me sad because maybe if the AM cover was more interesting than just a pic of Giygas, then it might have sold much better.)
LoZ: WW (AM: this one is just too simple. Maybe a nice color pic of Link or Windfall Island would have been better. Hopefully TW will have something other than the "goldish Zelda art")
Half-Life 2 (AM: Great game, but the cover was kinda boring. But it does make up points for the multiple faces on them)
We Love Kata: (AM: I wish they would have just kept the Jap version. Of course, we always get the [img]/xxx.gif[/img][img]/xxx.gif[/img][img]/xxx.gif[/img][img]/xxx.gif[/img]ty ones. :rolleyes2 )

I'll probably remember more later. My brain is getting fried from staring at this monitor for so long.

I recently came across the cover art for Famicom Wars DS (a.k.a Advance Wars: Dual Strike). Bonus points for the originality, but mutant Playmobil characters aren't exactly what I look for in my box art. And yes, NOA changed it, in case you're wondering.

Half the reason I rented FFX at first was because of the box art, it was really nice. I also heard good things about it.

Kingdom Hearts most definately. And Ico now also, because it seems to have taken inspiration from one of my favourite artists.

[Pure Strife]

The european FF covers with the all white thing I've always found very cool. Nice and stylish. The Resident Evil Remake's and Resident Evil 4's pal covers are great in their simplicity, especially the dried blood effect on the REmake. MGS covers are always cool too.

I like simple, stylish art, which is largely what Europeans get, whereas most Americans seem to prefer big in-your-face pictures of characters and stuff. Not that suprising, but odd all the same.
