Yes, you have to press a button in order for the game to progress...
you aren't given any options, though...

Well the "ice" you're refering to is that light in the above picture... only... in craptacular graphics WOW. O___O!!! As you can see from their stump-like appendages--mmm sexy~ --the graphic artists had a few.. limitations.

It's a reflection. The floor was reflecting the wall around the city:

    Linkage.

    1. Why does Cloud say "What are YOU making me do?" to Aeries?
He doesn't. He's talking to Sephiroth. Where are you even getting the idea that Aerith could control him?

    2. Why would YOU be in control of Cloud at the time if it wasn't something HE had "Decided to do" When the JC make cloud give up the Materia you don't control him.
As said, one has to do that so as to make the scene progress, and it's not like you really get a choice concerning what he does. Your button input simply reflects Cloud's attempt to resist Sephiroth's control.

    3. How come you're all alright with Future's theroys about FFVIII but not Mine On FFVII?
Who the hell is alright with those?
I love my Carys with all my heart.
