In any event, I prefer to keep the original names, at least on the first playthrough. If I'm bored enough, I might mess around with them.
I only change the main characters name. I always name it Nik.

I always keep the proper names otherwise it causes confusion when your talking with people about the game
I never change mine. Well i changed Rinoa to Riona cos before, that's what i thought her name was. I couldn't remember to call her rinoa so i just changed it
My little brother changes everything. And he always puts everything in CAPS SO IT LOOKS LIKE THIS. so in his party he'll have zell DYLAN selphie. his name isn't even dylan...he doesn't even know a dylan...
I'll change them around for fun, but only after I've beaten the game and have a good understanding of what names will prove to be hilarious when seen in the game, i.e. calling Barret "Cuddlebear" or something like that.
Yeah doesn't it suck when a game lets you have some personalization with your game and make it a bit customizable? How dare they.

I aways stick to the easiest path, unless they don't have names to begin with (FFI and III), in which case I just use other names in the Series, or go by their class, like in 8BT.

It's just easier to keep the original names, especially when I'm stuck on a part and need help. I did change Tifa's and Aeris' names to two of my female inlaws when I first played FF7 in 1997. the one that was named for Tifa was sooooooooo pissed when Cloud went with Tifa on that date in the cable car in the Gold Saucer :rolleyes2. I caught hell from her for a long time lol.
Sometimes I name the main characters after myself or something. When I played through FFVI last, my friend and I named all the characters after people we thought matched up to their personalities. I was Setzer and he was Umaro.
It's hilarious if you name everyone in FFIV "Golbez", and if you name everyone "Kefka" in FFVI.
