Why does Cid carry a spear?

It's the Highwind bloodline (seriously). With a name like that, you have to use a spear (and Jump!).

the question i'm asking is WHY he even has a weapon. sorry if i didn't make that clear. he had a spear in the first place, but why did he even have any type of weapon?

Because he's an astronaut, but he seems more like a sailor to me, with his potty mouth and his "Luck be a lady tonight" and his cigarette smoking and his outfit. But I'm guessing in the age FF7 is in, true sailors are gone.

What about the ship where you first encounter Jenova? You even had to dress up as sailors to get on. And Red XIII was funny acting like a human.

it is so damn obvious:

cid is a house maid (a male one, or a butler if you will). he origionally used a mop, but didnt use it much since it was his first mop he ever had. on their trip to the temple of the ancients, he had dropped it, and went to find it. upon finding his lost mop, he had said in the dialogue CLEARLY, "Since i could lose my most precious mop at any time, i might as well make the best of it before i lose the @$#%& thing. Hahahaha." that was a clear statement made from cid in the dialogue. now, the reason why he uses spears and shaft looking things, is because he was so used to mopping, he figured hed use something in the relative shape of a mop, since he had been so used to holding/carrying/using one. that is why he uses a spear.

Why does Crono weild a Sword in CT? Why should a princess know how to use a bow (again, Marle/CT)? How should four orphans know how to hold their own in battle (FFIII)? What about the kids of FFII? Why should of child of only five be able to use a bow (Rydia)? What about a King, should he really know how to use swords, spears, and tools (Edgar)? I could go on, but the answer to these questions are all similar. There is no particular reason for Cid to weild a weapon. He joins your party, and would be useless without one, so they decided to give him a spear and make him a Dragon Knight.
