I grew up on Sonic, I enjoyed the 3D games to an extent, and will always love the classics. I loved the speed and the gameplay. But the Mario series, at least with the NES and through the N64, consisted of better quality games. They're still some of the best, if not the best, platformers ever made. I just happen to really suck at them.
Mario, all b/c he is kewl and red oh, and red is superior to blue.
Sonic, but both game series' are LONG past their prime if you actually care about any of the new games.

Mario but only because I have more childhood memories of Mario. Sonic has always been a great series as well. I still need to get Sonic Adventure for my DC, I just feel like my collection will always be lacking without it. Mario Sunshine was Mario 64 with a water gun. Meaning it was a perfectly good game. I don't like Mario Party though. Mario's Parties creep me out.
I much prefer Mario. He doesn't need to be fast, extreme, and cool to cover up the fact that his games suck. Nor do his games suck.
I liked Sonic Adventure 2 though. That's pretty much the one Sonic game I can stand.
To hell with Battletoads and Double Dragon.

I don't know where all this Sunshine hate's coming from, because I loved it.
Are we talking about the two characters in a fight? Or the game series? If fight, Sonic. If series, Mario. I've been with Mario since I was 2 and he has never let me down. Although the Genesis Sonic games were amazing, Mario 64 paved the way for 3D worlds and was one of the best games ever created.

Mario. But strictly SNES generation Mario. Sonic was always... Yoshiless.
A real challenge to chose between is Yoshi and Tails. I like them both. I'd have to go with Yoshi though. It's not all wimpy like Tails is (and I noticed that from one episode of Sonic) and it can fly and carry a rider.
