I have to say Mario. Though I love Sonic.
Gotta go with Mario here. Sonic's classic games for the Genesis were really quite fun, but I admit I've not played any of the most recent Sonic games. And I grew up on Nintendo more than Sega growing up, so that also influences my vote, no doubt.

Mario, because to me while Sonic was fun, it wasnt as challeging as a Mario game where i STILL remember those retard water stages that go up and down in Mario 3. Sunshine was ok, could be better but its ok for the most part. Platformers rule.
Sonic presently isnt that good...seems to be losing speed. However the older games were pretty fun too, but it never seemed to put as much an impact on me as Mario did.

Although that may be a bit biased because Sonic (for mastersystem) was my very first game and I only ever owned a NES. But even to this day I can go back and enjoy them as much as I did back then.
As for Mario, I just don't like it. After I went though my big Sonic revival stage I played Super Mario World for SNES and I just couldn't play through it. It was just seemed slow, clunky and a little too surreal for my tastes.

If you are talking about anything made after Genisis/Megadrive (especialy the 3D games) then I agree.
If you are talking about the original 2D series then I'm afraid you must die.
