Default So why is FF VI concidered the best? And why do you concider it the best?

it seems that almost all FF sites I view reguard FF VI as the best, heck even I think that FF VI the peak of the series. but why is this so?
why does FF VI stand out so much in a world ruled by its follow ups like FF VII and X?
I mean the game does have "flaws" that most dont like, such as not having a main character.
and its plot isnt entirelly original when you look at it, well at least not until the world of Ruin.
and most of the characters dont have a lot of background to them...

so what does make this game stand out?
is it because it is the last of the "classic" 2D FF games
    or is it something more?

and do note that this is coming from a fan of this game, but I do think they are good questions

    FFVI sparked a turning point in the series. They had always been maturing, plot-wise, and gameplay-wise. But 6 was like... a growth spurt. Or rather, it was like FF had finally left puberty and showed drastic signs of adult-hood. It marked longer and deeper plots. Way more characterization and focus on the characters. The plot wasn't just some bizarre save-the-world scenario. It was aimed to hit home in a lot of ways. You weren't just saving the world because it was part of the game. You wanted to save the world because you cared about it, and the characters that lived in it. Everything about it was just... "more" than any other FF or arguably probably any other RPG before it. It set the foundation for the watermarks of games like FF7 and the rest of the series. Which of course set standards for every other franchise out there >_> It set up a domino effect and set the stage for FF7. Which went on to open the world's eyes to everything 6 already tried to tell them. But then that set a series of events in place that finally gave me my beloved Xenogears. So I guess I owe a lot to 6. It deserves it's praise. Probably the single most influential and awesome game XD {/hype}

I see FF6 as the 'high tide' of the series. The battle systems of the past games sort of came to a head and developed in this one. I do think that there was way too much of a focus on espers.
Really, FF4 was the best just for the epic sense. FF6 was very epic as well, and it's story was unique without being completely over the top.
After FF6, we had flashy battles, prerendered dungeons, and too much of a technology/realism gap. It ceased to become fantasy, and became overly cheesy. The characters quit being unique, and became extras from second rate bands. Really, Square just sold out, hired a bunch of designers, and disguised unimaginitive/rehashed stories in flashier trappings.
So FF6 was the highest point of everything that made FF good, and although I don't consider it the best, I sometimes feel that way.

FFVI is my favorite primarily for sentimental reasons; it was my first FF.

I think some of what others have said rings true. There was pretty decent character development, a decent storyline. Some really hilarious scenes and dialogue. And, of course, the greatest NPC ever (three guesses who).

ff6 is the only rpg that has a 'clown' look alike for a villian..........and it works.......because of nostalgia..........urbane chracters........funny scenes...........a sense of care for this world and its chracters.........not because you have to save the world...but because want to......not many rpgs made me feel the way that ff6 did.........and it should show.......i'm always at this damn forum

i actually dont get why people like this game so much. i thought it was ok. i didnt really feel attatched to any of the characters, in fact, the only person i really liked was kefka just cuz he was a frickin psycho. and usually, when i ask people why they lke FF6 the best, i get the non-specific answer of "shut up!11! FF6 teh pwns teh gayz0rs ff8!111!1"

well in comparision I didnt really like FF VIII
sure it had a lot of good concepts but its story and characters didnt appeal to me.
Squall was practically a carbon copy of Cloud, the male teenager with a bad attitude thing is something that FFVII did a little better.
sure graphically FF VIII is better, but graphics have nothing on storyline and gameplay.
and I do admit I like FF VIII's soundtrack a bit better then FF VI, but thats more of a taste in music then in gameplay/ storyline

I personally thought that the transition between the first and second half of the game, and several events, were very emotional. This is a great Final Fantasy, and it certainly feels a lot more polished, more expansive, and everything than the previous games.

FF6 has so much content it's mind boggling. The game was much larger than the FFs before it, and there was a plethora of side quests to do. Gathering all of the Lores, gathering all of Gau's Rages, uncursing the cursed shield, recollecting all of the various characters, getting all the summons and special equipment, and the collesium. Top that all off witha solid and emotional storyline and greeat characters and you have a great game.

Also, some argue that FF6 had better sound quality than FF7, even though it was on the playstation. Sure, FF7 had some emotional themes, but so does FF6, and a lot of people think they sound better.

I really don't think it is the best, though. I like FFIX and FFT a great deal more than this game, and even FFVIII. I loved this game but I don't think it is the best.

ah, but are those opinions based more off of GRAPHICS then the real value of the games?
certainly FF IX and VIII had great graphics but thier storylines were not as good as FF VI's [though the one with the worst plotline was VIII in my opinion]
    plotline wise my rankings go:
    VI
    VII
    IX
    X
    V
    VIII

but graphically it goes like this:
    X
    IX
    VIII
    VII
    VI

THOUGH I dont base my opinions on graphics alone

I take it in as a whole. I am NOT a graphics whore. I thoroughly disliked FFX and FFX-2 for a long time, which had awesome graphics.

I think FFVIIIis a lot more fun, and interesting. I liked the card game, magic system, and even the plot. FFVIII is more my cup of tea. I like FFT better than FFVIII, simply because I like the strategic battles. It has nothing to do with graphics, but graphics are still an important part of any game.

Don't forget that 'better' or 'worse' is all relative to taste.

well I personally didnt like FF VIII's storyline that bit...
but the card games and some of the side quests are good...
and the Draw system is also interesting, though I hated taking so much time to suck spells out of my enemies...
I much prefered the Materia System in FF VII, my favorite magic system in the game series [though the spere system is interesting]

It's not the best. It sucks with it's 2-D graphics and lack of Cloud and Sephiroth.
    I like Kung-Fu.
