Story: By using only the finest selection of malted barley, slowly dripping it through firmly packed charcoal made from hard maple sugar into oak barrels, Mr. Daniel perfected his gold medal winning recipe in 1866, though he would not actually recieve this medal until 1904. While this process was widely used, the time and expense involved made it less popular with penny-pinching whiskey makers, but Mr. Daniel thought it was essential. In 1904 Mr. Daniel entered his Old No. 7 Tennessee sipping whiskey at the World's Fair held in St. Louis, Missouri. Of the 20 whiskeys from around the world, his was the only one awarded the World's Fair Gold Medal and honored as the world's best whiskey.
