Thread: Nazi comparison is becoming cliched.

    Nazi comparison is becoming cliched.

Will the trend of pundits comparing their opponents to Nazis ever end? It was aggravating enough when Bush was compared to Hitler (even I woudn't stoop to such idiocy) but its gotten to the point where every gamer's favorite lunatic Jack Thompson compared ESA president Doug Lowenstein to the leader of the third reich. The reason I take such offense from these comparisons is that since it is thrown about so easily, the actual crimes the Nazis commited are being trivialized.

i do it alot. i also use christain language and quotes when i'm not a believer.

there is a reason why it is used. it provokes strong emotions.

    Amen brotha

Sorry couldn't resist. I do agree with cloud here. I think constantly hearing that the nazi leaders were evil is greater than hearing about them in serious discussion only.

Its like cursing... it can be overused, but its somtimes better than trying really hard not to use it... right?

It's like several curse words I could name. It's overused so much that it lost all punch.

There are some things that can validly be compared to Nazi atrocities, but it is an over-and-missused comparison. As much as I dislike Bush, he is no Hitler.

there are recent events that can be judged similar to nazi german hisotry. 9-11/recichstag fire and the subsequent acts for example. the alienation of a race. the failure of the international committee to stop it. etc.

It's fun, and complaints like this are the peak of the pleasure in doing it.

The only reason it can be aggravating for me is that possibly none of the people whom make such comparisons even know a whole lot about Nazi Germany....

as opposed to what Senator Dick Durbin said, which was exactly correct.

well i did up to advanced higher studying the rise of nazism and nazi germany so i know a bit.

neo-nazis aren't even good nazis... any other comparisons are way over-blown.

    neo-nazis aren't even good nazis...
    What's a good Nazi?

I'm okay with these comparisons when they actually have some sort of validity to them. Comparing Bush to Hitler because 'he so evil' is lame. Comparing post 9/11 America to the early stages of Nazi Germany is a somewhat accurate comparison because there are actually similarities between the two.

Come to think of it, in all my years of internet discussion, I haven't been compared to a Nazi yet! It's almost tragic, cause it's the classic thing you have to be called once in your life, or else, you die with some kind of emptiness in your heart.

Well, when I use it--even when I'm serious--I am just making an extreme point to get what I'm saying across.
