Actually, the game states fairly clearly that Red did have a mother. During the party's first visit to Cosmo Canyon, Red makes clear that his esteem for his mother does not extend to his father.

Uh as for the fact that red 13 was the only of his species left, I think the whole concept was left open ended, and anyway. For there to have been those cubs (or whatever) with him, he couldnt be the only one left. Thus maybe more will be shown in AC, as I know for a fact he is in it.

We can clearly see the tattos Hojo gave him, so yes, that one's Nanaki for sure.

It kind of sucks i wanted cloud to survive forever. It's just kind of dead that every charcater just died and Red is the only one left of his friends. I wanted cloud to live forever because of the Jenova Cells in his body. I want the ff7 to survive. It's sad really though.
