Default FF2: Am I the only one who fight this way?

Most people I know tend to make Gus this beefy fighter, and that´s understandable, since he´s got the highest potential.
However, I usually want to have the fighter at the top, including two wizards of different kinds.
This meant I had to use Firion as a fighter, since he´s at the top, and therefore the others became two different wizards.
I always play this way; Firion as a Knight, Maria as a White Wizard and Gus as a Black Wizard - you know, the "classic" line-up.
It simply feels better, in the end of the game I´ll have two Knights in the outer areas of the line-up, and the weak wizards "covered" in the middle (well, not really, but the SEEM covered).
I never liked the idea of making Firion a "Paladin", with sword skills and white magic or something, I wanted Firion to co-work with Leon as a decent Knight, it looked cooler and better.

no actually i fight the same way except in all the games i play i change the order so that the blackmage(or summoner in the case of FF4) above the white mage since i like it better.

There is a neverending amount of people who think they're profoundly clever for making Frioniel a white mage, Maria a warrior, etc.

Peter_18, there is nothing wrong with doing that at all. I can't think of any reason not to, other than the initial stats, but that's no big deal. I always make Leila act like a thief (fast and danger!) and Richard act like a warrior (I ATTACK NOWS!!), even though they come with some inherent magic skills.

Reader's digest version: Peter_18, that setup sounds fine.

I heard of a pretty good line-up once: Firion as a Paladin, Maria as a Black Wizard and Gus as a Fighter.
That, at least, sounded somewhat decent.

I had Frioniel as a White Mage with a Staff, Maria as a Black Mage with Knives and Guy as a Fighter with Double Axes in my last game of FF2 DoS. It worked pretty well. I let the characters joining my party use whatever weapon types they were originally using, except I made Lionheart another Fighter with a Shield and a Sword (he's left-handed).

The number one rule of FF2 is thus : Don't spread yourself thin. This isn't a game where "Red Mages" will work. Specialise, specialise, specialise.
There is no signature here. Move along.

The sad thing with many guides for this game is that they actually RECOMMEND the player to spread him-/herself thin; "buy Cure, Fire, Ice and Bolt for everyone and equip your best weapons and armour".
    Right... :rolleyes2

I always make my Firion a Paladin type character, Maria a Black Mage, and Guy a Fighter.

However, for the rest the characters like Richard, Leila, Josef, Gordon, and Leon, I never teach them Magic, because I feel that they don't need to learn any. Maybe I'll give a Cure spell to someone like Gordon, but that's about it

    Vaan - "Hey, you!"
Penelo - "Yeah, you! The one reading this sig at this very moment!"
Vaan - "Interested in playing FFXII International Zodiac Job system?"
Ashe - "But you have no knowledge of the Japanese language?"
    Fran - "....We could help...."
Balthier - "That's right, Fran! Just click on Crossblades' thread on the very bottom of this signature and it will show you all license grid translations, magicks and tecks locations, and other changes that were made!"
Basch - "Don't forget though. Swap Magic is needed to play this game if you don't own a japanese PS2."
Vaan - "Also remember that if you played the original, you'll have an easier time playing the international version. We hope you enjoy the International Zodiac Job System experience. See ya then!"

I thought Cure and Fire for Josef was pretty idealistic as well.

    That could work too.

You know, I recently started to play this game again, and I have to say I'm enjoying this game a lot more than I did before. I love the fact that you can customize your characters into any way you see fit

    Yeah, I also thought so.
I loved to increase HP and MP forever, until I reached about 2000 HP and 150 MP at the Warship, or something.
I don´t really care about that Level glitch, the game would be impossible without it anyway.

Guy is my black mage axe smasher status inpenetrable person. Well, with ultima, I really guess he's just the offensive white mage, but what are you gonna do about it?

Frioniel is the leet swordfighter who uses level 5 holy, Maria is the caneslady who uses level 6 holy xD

I'm happy with lionheart as a swordsman who can use a nice level 5 cure.

Man, I gotta finish this game one of these days. Perhaps I should level today xD

Party setup reccomendations will be forthcoming in the next revision of my site

Meanwhile, I'll just say some basics on it.

Don't give mages good weapons or armor (in fact, barefisted mages seems like a better idea than you might think), make sure you can heal a good amount of HP in one round, and if you want to know if something works, just battle test it. If you're getting through the dungeon fine, keep going. If you're not, re-think your strategy.

    My current setup is...

Frioniel: Paladin until Minwu dies, then pretty much dedicated white mage. Uses knife, NOT SWORD!
Maria: Black mage, back row when making a serious dungeon run, front row for training, equipped with staff, NOT BOW!
Guy: dual axe wielding cuisinart of doom

    Minwu: White mage, duh
    Gordon: Archer, BACK ROW STYLEE!!!
    Josef: Monk, again, duh
Leila: Th... HEY! Where did all my gils go?!
    Richard: spear guy (tm)
    Lionheart: sword guy (tm)
