I would think that you can have the option of using memory cards if you want to, however you do not have to if you want to save. I always felt it should have been like that when i got a PS2, that memory cards should either be included or optional. And having the PS3 be able to save on its HDD yet at the same time you can buy an optional Memory card sounds like a good idea.

Last I heard, the Harddrive was optional.

If that is the case, Memory Cards are almost a sure thing.

Or stop buying third party memory cards.

Suck it up and buy an official one.

Well DUH, whenever you cut the power it's going to corrupt data mid-write, the same thing will happen with a hard-drive, only it'll be worse than just a memory card.

Think about it as hitting your child in the brain with a baseball bat as he sleeps.

The power going out shouldn't do anything to a card unless it's being
written to at that moment, which is just very bad luck. If it's corrupting
data when it's not even reading/writing from/to the card then that's messed
up and has nothing to do with PS2 in general, but rather your personal
PS2 being a piece of crap. So maybe what you should hope for is that
    you'll get a good PS3.
