Thread: What incurs Trance?

    Default What incurs Trance?

I mean, how does one have the ability to trance? The description in the game is quite vague, I think Steiner said "Only chosen ones can achieve it" or something, but is there a more detailed explanation in the game that I might have missed first time round?

I only ask because I'm playing the game again now and Marcus is in my team and I'm on the world map levelling up, and he can't get trance, which is a shame. I guess it's only for the permanent playable characters, but still.. is there a more logical reason for it?

Not really. Expect a thirty-page reply from masamune1600 anyway, though.

Marcus is not a "chosen one", obviously.

The trance occurs after taking several turns with each character. Unfortunately, the Trance gauge (near the HP) resets after each battle so it doesn't carry over. I'd like to obliterate the guy who came with that limitation.

I just don't see how Marcus is different from any of the ones who can achieve it. Like I said, the whole thing is a bit vague.

want me to come up with an insane illogical theory? too bad, i'm still going to.

lets see.... *transforms to future esthar mode*

i believe OZMA, who is the God of this world, can see the future. he's a big colorful superball (those bouncy ones) that has the ability to give a person the trance mode when they become very emotional at/for someone or something. we can assume this because i said so. now ozma saw the future, and saw who these people were that are going on a huge journey to stop necron (the obvious satan of this world). ozma obviously hated necron because necron is satan, and cheated on ozma with Ruby Weapon from the ffvii world. therefore, he wanted these ones going on a journey to use trance, as it strengthens everything about the hero. yes. that's got to be it.

    *reverst to G-SpOtZ mode*

HAHA! i'm such an ass sometimes.

but seriously, i dunno what it is. it's just an overwhelming amount of power that is created through emotion. they don't back that up enough in the game tho.

    Thank you Hysterian!

In gameplay terms, only the permanent characters were given Trance abilities. Temporary characters, like Marcus and Beatrix, simply weren't designed with Trance in mind.

In story terms, that early explanation isn't wholly correct. Rather, Kuja suggests at Mt. Gulug and fully explains on Terra that anyone can achieve Trance. This would involve anger at one's surroundings, according to Kuja.

Kuja: How can that-That moogle went into a Trance!?

    Zidane: Kuja!

Kuja: So...an eruption of anger against one's surroundings induces a
    complete Trance!
It's not the will to live, nor is it the desire to
    protect another!

Zidane: Man, you're really goin' off! Hello!?

Kuja: That means...I simply need a powerful soul, even if that soul is
not my own! No, wait... And it can be found there! Hahahaha!!
Kuja: Yes! This is the power I've longed for!!! The mighty power of
souls! They assault any threat that tries to destroy them!

    Zidane: Wh-What do you mean...?

Kuja: It's Trance! You know how it works. But a normal Trance won't be
enough to defeat you... You're all as resilient as oglops. Even tiny
moogles possess the power of Trance... When I saw that in Gulug Volcano,
I came up with a plan. It was easy. I just needed to borrow the power
from wretched souls that can't die... Where did I acquire it? It was the
Invincible, or should I say, that large eyeball in the sky? The ship
sucked up the souls of Madain Sari, the Iifa Tree, Alexandria, to feed
upon them... When it fought Bahamut at the Iifa Tree, the Invincible drew
in a powerful spirit... Can you guess to whom it belonged?

    Dagger: No...

Kuja: That's right! It was your mother's soul. A wretched soul that
clung to life to the bitter end. The souls trapped inside the
Invincible welcomed me with open arms. (to Garland) They were fed up
    with being your prisoners, Garland.
So, master Garland. You are no
longer needed. And after you've worked so hard... I shall rule Terra and
Gaia with my unconditional love from now on...

Garland: What will you do with such...power?
So, in story terms, I guess you could say Marcus just stays too calm in battle.

You make a good point there actually. Marcus does come across as a little laid-back, hehe.

Plus, because he's not around the others as much, maybe he doesn't hold strong enough feelings for them to get extremely angry and trance when his allies are attacked. Not saying that he doesn't care about them at all, just doesn't hold strong enough feelings for them for him to achieve trance. Hmm, yeah I think that's an acceptable conclusion.

Steiner said "Trance is induced by a surge of emotion," but how come when Dagger loses her voice in Disc 3 - because of overwhelming emotion induced by her mother's death - she can't trance? Is it because she's trying to block out her emotions?

It's the same principle that allows Prince Adam to turn into He-Man. Or Bruce Banner into the Incredible Hulk.

No offense, but I've never seen Trance come into play unless the enemy does damage to your characters. (In other words, don't attack your characters yourself and expect a Trance.)

It's because she was all confused about pretty much everything and didn't have a good bead on much of what was going on in her head.

It only resets if the character was in Trance at the end of the battle. If you hadn't noticed, the Trance bar goes up when a character takes damage. Their desperation and pain becomes power, incurring Trance.
