A huge amount of gravity manipulation would be required in order to mess around with the monsters like that, but there'd have to be other factors involved to prevent the monsters dying from exposure to space, atmospheric re-entry or from the fall. So, I figure it's something like this: The Crystal Pillar's energy field is basically an annular force field that creates an enclosed 'corridor' between the planet and the moon. This corridor has less gravity than the moon or the planet itself, but there's enough of a force to draw the monsters toward the planet, along with a sufficient amount of the moon's atmosphere to keep the monsters alive. They're protected from space, from re-entry and from terminal velocity - problem solved.
