how do you suppose he obtained the masamune in the first place?

Thank you Hysterian!
hmmm, someone with a sword that big must be compensating for something :O
maybee is sheath is.... well i'll go with somsort of picture... the orange color is used to say where the blade is "incased" on the sheath....
(the top of the sheat is on the right.)

so only a part of the blade is sheated... the |_| is somesort of weird strap so that the blade does'nt get out.
If the game was going for a more realistic approach, it would fall in shambles. So be happy and enjoy....
it's uber like it's owner.
I don't think it has a sheath.

He probably had it given to him by Shinra. Well the Murasame is just lieing around when you find it.

The sword that Sephiroth owns can be teleported anywhere. That and it's invisible if you want it to be. Tifa proved that when she grabbed it in Cloud's flashback.
Ok well first we have to remember that he magically left the thing in president Shinra, then he magically has it again later. The next part we look at advent children when (SPOILER)I have no idea<pre>somebody answer that. lol i'm seriously curious.

Hope that didn't ruin anything from Advent Children for ya
Bipper
XD that just earned this thread a 7/10 rating.
Here in eoff we rate in Noob stars.

the way sephiroth draws his sword really is irrelevant to the way the game plays out.Originally Posted by Flare_Cross
anyways, he keeps a sheath on his side, and when he puts his sword away, the sheath is facing behind him, looking like it isnt there. most of an explanation i can give.
The scabbard must be somewhat flexible rubber, so if it's tied to sephiroth he can draw it easier.

Masamune is completely unpractical. It exists only to make him look cool.
A katana is designed to be curved slightly so that it can be drawn exceptionally fast (because when we swing our arms out, it tends to curve around the body instead of move straight). Wakizashi's (shorter katanas) are considered to be exceptional defensive weapons because they can be drawn faster and also have a smaller "blind spot". The same advantage goes to Kunai (daggers). Adversely, a Nodachi (the katana's bigger brother) has a lot more power behind it but the longer it gets, the more it has to curve. The more it has to curve, the more range advantage the wielder sacrifices while needless weight is added.
Sephiroth's Masamune is not only unfathomably long but has a curvature similar to that of a katana, instead of a nodachi (never mind the fact that it more or less triples the length of the nodachi, while means it would have to curve to the point where a chakram is formed).
Also the blind spot on the Masamune has to be huge. A katana is SINGLE EDGED (i.e. a blade) and needs to be flipped over constantly throughout a battle to keep the bladed edge in front. The weight of the sword also adds to this blind spot. Therefore, the Masamune, regardless of how well Sephiroth swings it, is slow as.
It's also convention (actually, a necessity) for all katana to come with a sheath. A sheath for the Masamune would be stupid because Sephiroth's arm isn't as long as his sword, which would also make drawing, as well as sheathing, unpractical. Besides, it's more badass to lug around an open sword.
Therefore. Sephiroth is stupid. And so is his stupid sword. They should have called it MaSTUPIDsame.
xD
My one and only question is: When in the game did anyone indicate the size of the Masamune? I don't remember that. If Square expects us to base the sword's size on one or two pics and the fact no one else can wield it, then those are factors that can easily be explained away.
