Grandia and Lufia are my favorites, but there are others like Breath of Fire (they're mostly just regular games, but they can be entertaining sometimes).

Suikoden.
Also Xenogears, although the Breath of Fire and Seiken Densetsu series are uncommonly good.
Plus Chrono Trigger is awesome.

I love the shining force series. It is made for sega systems so it is usually over looked. Very corney but very fun at the same time.
Jebus! nont square enix rpgs(Chrono nuttin!) (Xenogears was square) (Breath of fire I was also square)
edit: To digress, Shining force is basically what final fantasy tactics based itself off. So it is more of a tactical RPG - but with more of the classic fantasy style features.

Oh, right.
I read it as non-Final Fantasy, which is all Square (In all of its infinite wisdom, of course) sees fit to put out, instead of something from one of it's GOOD series.
Anyway. Suikoden.

Yeah, Shining Force was a great series (at least until the gameboy remake of SF1...). I'm still not sure if tactical RPGs are viable choices for this. If you've played Shining Force (or Fire Emblem) though, you know why I feel that they should be. Damn good games, with damn good storylines.Originally Posted by bipper

The original Baldur's Gate on PC was awesome. Which then begot KOTOR and KOTOR 2 which were increasingly awesome. And I don't think Xenogears should be counted as Square, same with BoF 1. Especially BoF 1...
And I'm all for the Shining Force vote. And of course Phantasy Star 4 (the only one that kept my interest)
Suikoden-the ultimate wandering aimlessly RPGs
Lunar-town, dungeon, plot advance, repeat
Disgaea-throw a penguin
Grandia-Plot predictable
Xenosaga-thankfully, the 5 hr. cut scenes are interrupted by 20 minutes of gameplay
Smile even though its breaking
Shadow Hearts Covenant
Shadow Hearts
Xenosaga
The first half of grandia 2 (the rest was cliche and boring imo)
And I really need to play Suikoden
I know it hasn't been said but the shadow hearts series is really wonderful. I love the battle system (judgement ring- it actually takes some skill to get good at), the characters were great, the storyline was excellently done if a little predictable at parts. The feel of the first game was wonderfully dark, and the second was filled with the best humor I've seen in a video game (Joachim/Grand Papillon). These were both wonderful games, also for all ff fans some of the people who worked on some of those (I think 7 and 8) that left square worked on these games (could be wrong about this but I'm pretty sure).

It was a cool concept, but I kind of like my RPG battle systems to minimize the interaction. All the Additions are what killed Legend of Dragoon for me.Originally Posted by raskerino

Square just translated the game and published it in America. The game itself, like all the other games in the series, was developed by Capcom.Originally Posted by bipper
