As a side note, does post-black differ from "avant-garde" metal or are they the same? I always see the same bands listed in either category (Arcturus, ...And Oceans, Ulver, etc.).
Avant-garde just refers to the unique/original elements of the music. Post-black metal does often contain many unique(or avant-garde) attributes, but there are also common, non-avant-garde elements, which all post-black metal bands share. Otherwise it wouldn't be a genre. Avant-garde isn't an actual genre as it could be anything. It's more like an adjective to put in front of the genre it shares the most similarities with, just like, for example, the word 'experimental'.
