oooh I remember that phase, the corn row phase, had em for two school years. moved on to plaits and twists and just having it out now.
They don't have to be expensive if you know someone who can do it (they'd probably charge ten at the least, my cousin gets his done for thirty, though), but that won't save you from having someone heavy handed braiding your hair. Now, the less hair you have, the tighter the braids. The tighter the braids mean that your scalp will be stretched. For my first year of corn rows, not only did the people who braided my hair not braid all that well, but they also managed to tug on my hair, doing so made me get bumps and gave me headaches and made my head really sore. Some girls have big hands and can't grab hair as easily as those with smaller hands, so they'd grab more and pull just as much.
If you want to get em, I'd say let the hair grow a little bit more so you don't have them tug away as bad. But that could just be my bad experiences and it could go well...
Corn rows are only ugly when the braider can't braid worth their life and the person wearing it doesn't do anything for them.
