With everyone and their mother carrying cell phones these days, I think it'd be more annoying if they all just rang. Then everyone would have to go digging for their phones to see if it their phone ringing or someone else's. Different ringtones make things way easier when in public, not to mention if you have the option to set different tones for different people, it can save the effort of routing around for your cell if it's someone you arent eager to talk to.

I agree. I find it more annoying with people using their cell phones obnoxiously in public with extremely loud ringtones than them just having ringtones.

I have a few ringtones but since I never even use my phone except for emergencies, I don't have that problem.

My present cellphone was my dad's old ancient pre-MMS/anything col cellphone given to me as a punishment coz i lost me brand new siemens phone. it has no ringtones and no wallpapers.

I don't mind ringtones much, I usually just roll my eyes if I think it's a stupid/annoying one.

However, my "Charlie Brown Theme" makes me happy when I get a call.

It definitely depends on the ringtone. Some are pretty decent while some other are annoying. I remember once when I worked at the Japanese Department library in Venice there was this man who didn't turn off his phone. I wanted to grab the damn thing, open the window, and throw it straight into the Canal Grande.
