But there can be a small difference between cat 4 and 5 at times.

well yes, there can be, but a strong small Cat 5 like Andrew that hits land with winds over 175 mph is a lot more destructive to the area it hits than a 145mph large Cat 4.

but Andrew practically wizzed through, Rita is alot bigger so the damage last longer in a bigger area so that could mean more destruction.

Strange Hurricane Andrew was one of the most destructive natural disasters ever and my name is Andrew aswell.

the main problem Rita can cause is flooding since it will dump a lot of rain and the Houston area has high vulnerability to flooding, although not nearly as bad as New Orleans. Andrew's winds were so strong that they ripped through almost everything, but flooding wasn't as much of an issue.

yeah but a 3rd Hurricane like this would do hell if Rita flops.

Just hope it does flop and there's no 3rd hurricane.

Alright, then, Mr. Meteorology Expert. You tell us how this is caused by global warming.
Hurricanes need warm water to form and thrive. Global warming causes the water to become warmer. End result: more, and stronger, hurricanes. Simple, really.

On annother note, the gulf states really can't catch a break, can they? At least alot of the area's allready been evacuated.

the main problem Rita can cause is flooding since it will dump a lot of rain and the Houston area has high vulnerability to flooding, although not nearly as bad as New Orleans.
Unfortunatly, the flooding is what tends to kill the most people.

well yea, flooding lingers for a long time and causes contamination issues. High winds tear up buildings but once the winds pass that's it.

High winds don't just tear up buildings, they can rip up roads, trees in other words extremely high winds like hurricanes of cat 4+ could decimate a down if it hits directly.

He's right- considering that, with winds that speed, stuff is hit with dozens of tons of air per second, the effect is like being caught in an explosion.

I love learning about this type of stuff, I always liked Geography but I cannot do it anymore because of my damn GCSE choices and crap so I study this in spare time.

if 60MPH winds can blow a couple of things away think of what winds of 150MPH can do!

Not to mention the sheer size of it, It's going to totally wipe out a few small towns and the sea walls of the coastal area it hits so if another hurricane hits...

This one is already a cat 5 storm and so early too, it could even surpass 200MPH at this rate.

All thanks to global warming but nooo scientists refuse to believe and come up with some b/s saying it's natural.
Yes more destruction more death!!!!!!!!1 I'm serious man. Its been boring in the States. Time for some diasters.

Watch I bet next Spring an F5 is gonna destroy OKC. Worse than the last one did.

Anyway I think this is a sign that yeah...God is pissed.... So yeah lol I'm taking my ACT saturday.

Hopefully it weakens to a Category 4, but I highly doubt it.

this country is really going to hell..... first we have our own government destroying us... and now nature is finishing us off.

somehow this is Bush's fault... not to get off topic, but since Bush was appointed to office (I think Bill Maher said it like this), we've lost: almost all of our allies, the surplus, 4 airliners, 2 trade towers, a piece of the pentagon, and the City of New Orleans. Now mother nature wants to finish us off.

I also have to agree with lordblazer.... IMHO we need to start thinning the herd a bit, we have way too many people in the world.

P.S. - GET YOUR GAS NOW!!!!!!!!! seriously get a huge stockpile of it, it doesn't expire trust me so dont be afraid, the prices won't go down

I dont' think they'll take many chances, with katrina still strong on the minds.

I was just starting to enjoy the gas prices going back down to what they were before, almost

I find it slightly amusing though, that a hurricane named after my dog is playing fetch with the coast xD
