    Default Another bloody Hurricane

Category 5 monster hurricane Rita is currently in the gulf of mexico with winds of 175MPH+ due to hit land Saturday, New Orleans poses danger as does Texas and the other part of that area.

This one is already a cat 5 storm and so early too, it could even surpass 200MPH at this rate.

All thanks to global warming but nooo scientists refuse to believe and come up with some b/s saying it's natural.

No hurricane will be able to surpass 200MPH. It will likely weaken down to a CAT4 hurricane as it approaches land.

Apparently, I have been declared banished.

yea, cat 5 hurricanes generally can't sustain that strength for a very long period of time. Rita looks rather similar to Katrina in size and strength.

it's a bit bigger than Katrina but it's a bit faster than Katrina reached.

I believe it's actually a little bit smaller than Katrina. Like all cat 5 storms, it's currently weakening because the conditions necessary to create a cat 5 are generally unsustainable to maintain the strength for very long. While the storm may have hit 180mph, it's slowing back down into the 160mph range and will likely continue to slow over the next day before it hits land.

That said, it's still a very dangerous and strong hurricane.

Yes, on CNN here they said that the winds were marked near 200 mph (pertaining to wind GUSTS i would assume), and that was when it was a cat 4. The actual number that comes to mind was 165. Staggering.

They made a simulation map that suggested if it hits that Galveston texas may, in essence, be eraced from the map. It is also heading towards huston. This is causeing exon and several other oil refineries to shut down. GO GET GAS NOW!

    [edit]
(sorry I posted this while you were posting eestnic) The dangerous part of the hurricane is that it is slowing down. Not so much wind-wise, but the storm mass is moving very slow. It creates a horrid probability of serious flooding. The water is what kills most people in hurricanes, not the wind, as stated on the Weather channel.

Galveston was basically decimated by a huge hurricane in 1900 and this one could do basically the same thing.

if it's slowed down in the gulf waters then it aint good at all.

The gulf waters are a hell of alot warmer than they should be and this should juice up Rita.

    Oh how nice this is.

I hope the evacuation goes well 'cause one mistake will kill thousands.'

the water is estimated to come at up to 50ft when Rita hits land on Saturday. It's half way inland by Tuesday.

Warm waters juice up hurricanes and that means it can sustain cat. 5.

They should extend the scale if hurricanes commonly get this big.

Alright, then, Mr. Meteorology Expert. You tell us how this is caused by global warming.

easy read up on the green house effect this means the waters will become naturally warmer therefore the hurricanes are more ferocious.

The warm waters provide water that creates clouds and become rainfall. The windspeed is based upon pressure differential between the storm and the low pressure point in the eye. Massive supplies of warm water make the storm bigger but not necessarily stronger. Once a storm reaches such a large size it can no longer sustain its strength, which is why hurricanes that actually make landfall as a Cat 5 (Andrew, Camille) are much smaller. Storms like Katrina and Rita are so large they cannot sustain Cat 5 strength as long and weaken before landfall.

Hurricanes aren't going to get siginifacntly bigger than the 170-180mph range such as to necessitate a Cat 6 classification.

In regards to global warming and the frequency of hurricanes, the north Atlantic has experienced an extremely calm hurricane season over the last 20-40 years and the current heavy hurricane seasons are more a return to historical norms. Global warming can contribute to hurricane creation by warming deep sea currents, but the Gulf of Mexico is generally this warm anyway. The difference is that more storms are generation out in the Atlantic and sustaining tropical strength long enough to reach the warm Gulf of Mexico waters. Pretty much any storm that makes it into the Gulf of Mexico will become strong, but many things have to occur before a storm that generates over the middle of the Atlantic Ocean can make it into the Gulf.

a massive cat 4 storm is just as destructive as a tiny cat 5 storm.

Global warming plays some part in this but the currents change as they do letting in calmer warmer waters.
