    Default Pakistani/Kashmiri/Indian earthquake

    http://www.nzherald.co.nz/section/st...ectID=10349533

This is horrible. Thirty thousand dead so far... It's good that there's been such a strong international response so soon, especially with India and Pakistan putting aside their differences to co-operate.

Well, its nice to see things get shaken up a bit there. Pun slightly intended, as the deaths are nothing to laugh at, the peaceful cooperations are definatley a promising gesture. Not just between rival countries, but between several other countries whom lend aide despite thier minor differences, and thier own uncomfortable positions. (Affghanistan)

I am quite impressed with the reaction over all. Quicker than Katrina, and this is an international effort. hmm.

edit: India is located where to plates are converging, forming the Himilah(horribly butchered and mispelled I am sure of it) mountains. Its no accident.

This is really sad. On the other hand, maybe some random caves in Afghanistan collapsed in on themselves.

Yeah, the entire Indian subcontinent is bordered by geological faults. The Himalayas are testament to the size and power of the forces involved, having been forced up as a result of constant geological processes. Earthquakes are ridiculously powerful phenomena, and are neither seasonal nor even reliably predictable... scary stuff. My entire country *is* just the eruption of land where two plates are colliding, so it's a particular worry here. The entire nation could easily be affected by a sufficiently large quake...[q=Hawkeye]Wasnt there just a huge India Earthquake about a year ago?[/q]The Iranian city of Bam was levelled by a quake in late 2003, killing over forty thousand people... and the Boxing Day tsunami was triggered by an undersea earthquake.

So Afghans dying is good but Indians dying isn't? I'm confused.

Yeah, I got that too What I don't get, is all this happens, and the US quickly sends off a small force of hellicopters to find a potentially dead Osama!? Lame. If the dude is dead, he aint moving.
Also, to my understanding, we are reacting slow as ever to this disaster.

On a side note, I can't wait to see some conspiracy theorist start touting and say that Bush/Blair made an earth shaking machine. (as they would prolly call it)

god this is poor. tens of thousand of people die. and it gets 9 replies (including this one). that is pretty damn shocking. it wasn't the same with katrine now was it.

this thread has amounted to big d acrually being concerned. hawkeye asking if this happened a few years ago like it's becoming tiresome. bipper making a joke. but did point out the politics of it. a nice little georgraphy lesson. eestlinc seems to think that osama bin laden is more important than tens of thousand dead people. big d gives us more of a history and geography lesson. dmka gets confused. rusty clears it up. eestlinc congratulates him. and bipper talks about the aid effort.

what do i see in this? big d is the only person to actually grasp and care. the rest of you seem to act like this isn't a big deal. it's just a bunch of towel heads who don't look or sound like you. frankly it's disgusting.

this is a huge disaster and in this thread there was been one description of it being bad. sorry two. eestlinc describes it as sad. then thinks bin laden is more important.

it is proof of our society that we shrug of this truly awful disaster and tragedy while went on for weeks about katrina.

Boy, you just can please anybody these days can you? Every goddamn thing you say is viewed negativly, because of your perception on the whole idea.

But yeah, blame us for having Katrina being a much more important topic in out society than something that has the concerns of half way across the world. Great.

some aid is better than none and it will grow, you can't have every major country helping out 2 seconds after the disaster can you?

7.6 is fairly big, but nothing compared to the most powerful quakes... I guess it must've been centered close to the surface to cause such horrific destruction.

I actually think the response has been quite impressive. Resources from around the world were on their way to the area within a day, so hopefully aid will get to those who need it, quickly.

However, it's gonna take a lot of time and effort to even begin sorting out this mess... After the Bam earthquake, about a billion dollars in aid was promised; after an entire year, only about $20 million of that had been delivered. A short-term rescue and evac effort is essential, and it's good that it's being delivered; but the long-term promises are just as vital. Here's hoping...

Incidentally, a prominent US televangelist, whose name I forget, is claiming that the recent spate of natural disasters are further proof that the end of days is coming.
