I played a few of the old ones, but not anymore. I played the PS2 version, and it was barely more advanced since the GameBoy Colour one. They're just too outdated now. But, they were OK a while ago. A big while ago. (That doesn't make sense, does it?)
The Gameboy Color version is a lousy port and the other one should not ever be mentioned again.
Play the main series.
I myself have never played the first of the games, but
Heroes of Might and Magic II - The Succession Wars
Heroes of Might and Magic III - Restoration of Erathia
with all the expansions are two of the most enjoyable games ever conceived by man.
The fourth one is.. Mediocre.

I have the Might and Magic that came out for the NES and haven't played any of the newer ones.
