There is no R=U. The official word in Ultimania is that Sorceress' have the same lifespan as humans, so Rinoa couldnt live to be Ultimecia. That is the OFFICIAL world.
Ultimecia's rise to power would be interesting, but I think the best sequels are the ones involving the original cast.
lets not get into the R=U theory....

That was the winning entry for the "Design Your Own Dressphere!" contest FFX2.net had back when FFX-2 was still new in the United States.
FFVIII-2, in my opinion, would be a dumb idea. There are no plans for it and I don't see it ever happening (thankfully). FFVIII wrapped itself up perfectly..although FFX did too and yet that's the one they chose to make a sequel for.
And FFVIII-2 doesn't come with the FF Oddessy Package...that's FFIIIV you'e thinking of, and the FF Oddessy Package is so hard to find because it's only availible in Sidney, Australia.

Well X was left open because of the appearance of Tidus at the end. If they hadnt shown him, it'd have been pretty cut and dry.
I thought the appearance of Tidus at the end was the most perfect way they could have left X. It was epic and magical at the same time. Theres the tears and drama and the nice little sign showing he came back. It was perfect.
...and they ruined it with a little thing called FFX-2
Whether it was perfect or not, it left the door open.
And I was fine with X-2, so I dont mind either way really.
FF X-2 was like the Power Puff Girls,
"Y-R-P in position, it's showtime girls!!"
And which is even more funny, that Rikku's voice is Bubbles' voice!!
